The First Division 1965/66 was the 51st season in the history of the highest Maltese football league . The Sliema Wanderers became champions for the 18th time .

Compared to the previous season , promoted FC Birkirkara replaced the relegated Gżira United and FC Rabat . Birkirkara was back in the House of Lords for the first time since the 1962/63 season .

The season was played back and forth. There were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no point for a loss. In the event of a tie, a decision game was played for the championship and the relegation places. The last placed had to relegate to the Second Division.
