Fortnite is a Koop - Survival - Shooter provided by People Can Fly and Epic Games was developed and by a free, on the Royale Battle genre -based, stand-alone mode, Fortnite Battle Royale gained its popularity. The third-person shooter was released on July 25, 2017 worldwide except in China for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Windows .

That is based on the Battle Royale genre standalone mode, Fortnite Battle Royale , was published on 26 September 2017. Since 13 March 2018 Fortnite Battle Royale also for Apple - iOS devices as part of an Invite events available. The mobile version of the Battle Royale offshoot was also released for Android as an APK in early August 2018. In June 2018, Fortnite Battle Royale was released for Nintendo Switch . Until the 5th season, crossplay between the individual platforms was possible, but this function was then restricted due to difficulties. A version for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 was confirmed by Epic Games on May 13, 2020.

    Modes

    save the world

After a global catastrophe, 98% of humanity has disappeared and instead zombies are roaming the area. The player and (if available) his team should collect loot in order to build a fortress and defend it from the zombies that appear in the night. You can also play this mode alone. The mode is chargeable. In the mode selection, up to patch 9.0 it was read that the "Save the World" mode 2019 will be free in the future, but this has been removed along with the visual editing of the mode selection.

    Battle Royale

In this free mode ( free-to-play ) up to 100 players compete against each other either alone or in teams of up to four players. The last survivor or the last surviving team wins.

At the beginning of a round, all players jump over the same map and are only equipped with a pickaxe, with which they can mine the building materials wood, stone and metal and deduct 20 (previously 10) life points from players per stroke. The materials collected in this way can be used to erect walls, stairs and other parts of the building that offer protection from enemies and their shots, or can be used to bypass obstacles. Weapons and other useful items are scattered on the map and can be picked up by the player. There are six classes of weapons that add different amounts of damage to opponents and can be reloaded at different speeds: common (gray), unusual (green), rare (blue), epic (purple), legendary (orange) and mythical (gold) . A larger number of items are contained in supply deliveries , so-called loot drops , which fall from the sky in small numbers. There are also piñata lamas, each containing 200 (previously 500) materials of each type as well as items such as potions, traps or jumping surfaces, but also explosive weapons, but no firearms. Crates are mostly found in buildings. After a few minutes, a storm draws on the map, making the playable area (the "eye of the storm") smaller and smaller in a circle from the outside in, so that the players are brought together. Ultimately, the eye of the storm shifts to a place on the game map where the storm is already raging, so players will inevitably take damage from it, leaving practically no other option than to face the opposing players and fight them turn off. The construction system is of great importance here. The firing system is random as the first shot with most weapons has 100% accuracy, which is followed by shots with variable spread.

In the Battle Royale mode, time-limited events are published every now and then, which usually have different special tasks based on the same 100-player principle. Some examples of this are the 50-vs-50 mode, modes in which only certain weapons appear (e.g. sniper combat, high and explosive) or rounds in which only golden, particularly good and strong weapons are in play ( Pure gold). These modes are playable two weeks after the date of publication.

In the "Playground" sub-mode, players can play on the map without the Battle Royale gameplay.

    Seasons and Events

Fortnite publishes a new season about every ten weeks, which brings various changes to the gameplay with it. This includes game updates, time-limited event modes and challenges, adjustments to the map, new cosmetic changes (" skins ") and new items that are usually assigned to a specific topic.

    Chapter 2

After the end of the 10th season on October 13, 2019 with the live event "The End", which hinted at the destruction of the game world by a black hole and was followed by millions of viewers on Twitch and YouTube, the game was taken offline and opening the game or the website just opened a screen with a black hole as a background.

The offline switching turned out to be a PR campaign by Epic Games to introduce a new map into the game and to continue the new seasons under Chapter 2 ("Chapter 2"). The old map is no longer playable because it was devoured by the black hole after it was displayed in the game. The new map has 13 new locations and allows the use of boats as a means of transport due to the many rivers. From this version on, the player is also able to swim and fish objects. The game has also been expanded to include stealth elements and offers the player more opportunities to hide. The 1st season of Chapter 2 (actually Season 11) started on October 15, 2019.

    Crossovers

Another important marketing strategy for Fortnite is crossover in the form of time-limited events or skins to other media, artists, films and video games. In December 2019, for example, there was a big Star Wars event for the new movie Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker .

    Creative mode

A creative mode was launched on December 6, 2018 with the beginning of the 7th season of the Battle Royale mode for Battle Pass players. In this mode, each player has access to several private islands that can be built, worked on and then played on. These maps are shared with other players in the form of user-generated content .

For example, players have the option of placing prefabricated buildings, vehicles, weapons, boxes, consumables and other objects and defining the settings for the upcoming game. You can then play in the game modes Free For All , Cooperative and Deathmatch. Individual objects can also be edited, copied and deleted with the mobile phone in the inventory of construction mode. Furthermore, the players have the opportunity to use and play the maps of other users. Both building and playing can be done alone or with several players.

Since December 13th, the game mode has also been available for free to players who do not have a Battle Pass. The creative mode was used by players to create their own mini-games and maps e.g. B. Recreate Nuketown from Call of Duty .

    In-game currency

In the Battle Royale mode there is its own currency, the so-called V-Bucks [spoken: "Wie-Backs"]. These can be purchased in-game for real money or collected through missions in the PVE “Save the World” mode, although the latter can take some time. The games company Epic Games raised $ 296 million in May 2018 through the sale of V-Bucks . For € 9.99 you get 1,000 V-Bucks, € 24.99 € 2,800, € 59.99 € 7,500 and € 99.99 € 13,500.

    Battle Pass

The Battle Pass can be bought with the V-Bucks . The Battle Pass is a better version of the Free Pass , which you get for free at the beginning of the game as well as every new season. The Battle Pass gives the player a variety of cosmetic items as the game progresses, such as rucksacks, capes or various outfits, which however do not have any advantage over other players. In addition, among other things, weekly challenges will be unlocked, which are accompanied by additional experience points and stars for the Battle Pass . Ten stars each unlock one of 100 possible levels in the Battle Pass . The Battle Pass usually has a validity period of ten weeks per "Season" (depends on the length of the "Season"), at the end of a season the Pass is reset. However, you can keep all received items and V-Bucks and buy the next Battle Pass with them. In the 7th season of the game challenges were introduced, the completion of which is rewarded with the Battle Pass from the 8th season. This is the first time that there is another option besides purchasing with V-Bucks to get the Battle Pass.

    Cosmetic changes

Furthermore, cosmetic changes can be purchased with the V-Bucks. Cosmetic items change the appearance of the character (" skins "), the hang glider, the harvesting tools or the backpack. There are also so-called emotes that change the character's movements, e.g. B. with dances. The cosmetic changes have no effect on gameplay. In June 2018, 69% of gamers made in-game purchases.

Fortnite was largely perceived positively by the press. The online database Metacritic , which collects and aggregates test reports from relevant media, calculated a Metascore of 81 out of 100 possible points for the PC version of the game. Karsten Scholz from PC Games refers to the typical shortcomings of a free-to-play game , but still attests Fortnite to be a high fun factor. On the Nintendo Switch , the gaming experience should be rated somewhat weaker due to technical and content restrictions. Robin Rüther from GameStar and Georg Pichler from Der Standard find the construction aspect and the cartoon graphics exciting, but also say that they are not for everyone and therefore cannot be compared with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which is more based on realism . Instead, more younger and casual gamers are addressed. The Tagesspiegel reported from the perspective of a Fortnite player and that of his mother about their first joint visit to Gamescom 2018 in Cologne. In response to this article, a computer scientist wrote separate letters to mother and son, the latter in turn being reprinted by the Tagesspiegel . The game established and improved some Games as a Service aspects that have been carried over from other games. However, the CEO Strauss Zelnick of 2K Games sees it differently and finds the separation between the gameplay and the sales model important.

    Sales and player numbers

On July 26, 2017, Fortnite announced the sale of over 500,000 digital pre-orders. On August 18, 2017, Epic confirmed that they had hit the one million player mark. The game's "free-to-play battle royale mode" reached over 10 million players two weeks after its release. In November 2017 there were over 20 million players. In June 2018, Epic Games confirmed that over 100 million players are actively playing Fortnite. At the end of November there were already over 200 million. This makes the game the computer game with most online gamers . The game is particularly popular with children and adolescents because it contains little violence in terms of content and optically cartoon graphics , while its sandbox and crafting principle reminds of games like Minecraft . It is the number one most popular game among under 18s, while popularity decreases sharply with age.

In 2018, Epic Games grossed $ 3 billion, the majority of which can be attributed to Fortnite. Investors had spent $ 1.25 billion on Epic through October. Fortnite was the most played game in 2018. The record is over 10.7 million simultaneous players. According to market research institute SuperData , Fortnite generated over $ 203 million in May 2019. In March 2019, the game had over 250 million registered players, 35% of whom are female. In May 2020, 350 million registered players were announced.

    Public perception and network culture

    Dances

The dances in the game became so popular that they were also used by inactive celebrity players, such as musicians, presenters and other entertainers, and also by athletes, such as football player Antoine Griezmann in the final of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The game also gained notoriety when Alfonso Ribeiro (known as Carlton from The Prince of Bel-Air ) sued Epic for allegedly stealing his dance. Rapper 2 Milly and Scrubs actor Donald Faison also complained about unauthorized use of their dances. The dance floss , in German dental floss, is particularly well known .

    Streaming media

Fortnite was one of the most popular games on the video platforms YouTube and Twitch in 2018 and also offers cooperation offers for larger personalities on these platforms. Therefore, the game was covered in detail in YouTube's own annual review YouTube Rewind 2018 , which caused criticism from viewers and contributed to the fact that the video is the lowest rated on YouTube. So u. a. criticizes that the video feels like a promotional video for Fortnite and that the dances seen there sometimes arouse foreign shame.

    Virtual concerts

The musician Marshmello used the game twice for a live concert and reached 10 million people for the first time in February 2019 and almost 300,000 people at the second appearance, which took place parallel to the 2019 World Cup. Another in-game concert with rapper Travis Scott took place at the end of April 2020 and was viewed by around 27.7 million players. It was aided by visual effects that turned the game world into a kind of psychedelic and surreal art. With around 12.3 million simultaneous players, Fortnite achieved the highest number of simultaneous players to date. Between May 9 and 11, 2020, concerts by DJs Dillon Francis , Steve Aoki and deadmau5 took place to celebrate the achievement of 350 million players and the new party mode in which players cannot fight. The German punk band The Screenshots also released a music video in the form of a machinima with Fortnite.

    Awards

Eurogamer placed the game at number 32 on their list of the "Top 50 Games of 2017". It was also nominated for "Best Co-op Game" in PC Gamer's 2017 Game of the Year Awards, and for "Best Spectator Game" in IGN's Best of 2017 Awards.

    criticism

    Copyright lawsuit

The South Korean game manufacturer Bluehole Inc. sued the manufacturer of Fortnite , Epic Games, in May 2018 , alleging that the company had violated the copyright of the game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (also known as PUBG) with Fortnite . The game mode "Battle Royale" and the user interface of Fortnite are said to be a plagiarism of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds . The lawsuit should be limited to South Korea for the time being. In June 2018, the lawsuit was withdrawn for reasons unknown.

Age rating and protection of minors

The originally published retail version with exclusively cooperative “Save the World” mode received in Germany in May 2017 an age rating from the entertainment software self-regulation (USK) from 12 years. For the competitive "Battle Royale" mode there has been no USK classification for a long time, since the youth protection law (JuSchG) of the federal government does not apply to sales on the Internet , but the youth media protection state contract (JMStV) of the federal states, which does not have a USK marking presupposes a delivery to minors (cf. § 12 Paragraph 1 and 3 JuSchG, § 5 JMStV). In mid-2018, the “Battle Royale” version was automatically classified from the age of 16 in the Nintendo Switch eShop using the method of the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) through the provider self-declaration of the game content using a questionnaire. In July 2019, a variant with "Battle Royale" mode for USK labeling was finally submitted and the review committee granted an age rating of 12 years and over.

Fortnite: Battle Royale has a Pan European Game Information (PEGI) classification from 12 years of age with the content descriptors for “mild violence” (light violence) and “in-game purchases” ( paid content in the game ); this classification is particularly relevant for Austria and Switzerland. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in the USA gave a “teen” rating with the content description “violence”, i. H. a classification for adolescents (teenagers) aged 13 and over.

The games guide-NRW , a project of the Center for Youth Media Culture NRW, and spielbar.de , an offer of the Federal Agency for Civic Education , awarded for the "Battle Royale" mode each educational recommendations 14 years.

On April 9, 2018 it was announced that the German branch of the Fortnite provider , Epic Games Germany, had joined the USK as the 40th member (in the USK.online division).

Due to the high popularity of the game among children and adolescents, the associated potential for addiction or the risk of neglecting other activities and the trivializing of violence in the game is criticized by some media. The representation of violence is also much more harmless compared to other games played at that age.

    Addictive

A class action lawsuit was filed against Epic Games in the Canadian province of Québec in October 2019 because, in the opinion of the applicants , Fortnite was designed to be addictive and inadequate to warn consumers. The lawsuit was started by two minors (now 10 and 15 years old) because of addictions that had already occurred . More specific information about the claims of the plaintiffs, the behavior of the parents and the like. Ä. is not yet known. In addition, the province's law prohibits targeted advertising to children under the age of 13 with addictive content and has more rigid consumer protection laws than the rest of the country's provinces, which could negatively affect the ruling for Epic Games.

Fortnite can be especially addictive to children and teenagers as they are generally more prone to gambling addiction. This can lead to the neglect of other activities. According to some media, it is the responsibility of the legal guardians to educate adolescents about the dangers of the Internet and computer addiction, to intervene if necessary and not to blame the game itself for addictive behavior. Some Fortnite addicted patients are in behavior therapy because of their computer game addiction , which is largely based on the reward and level system in the game.

    Vulnerabilities

The software company Check Point discovered in January 2019 that there was a security flaw in Epic's login process that made it possible to take over game accounts and listen to voice chat. The developers have been warned and the loophole has been fixed. Due to the large number of users with a lot of private data and payment information, the game is an attractive target for hackers. The young target group can also react more susceptibly to social engineering attacks than more experienced users.

    Government bans or restrictions

In countries like India , Nepal and Iraq , battle royale games such as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite have been banned because they were classified as harmful to minors or against state values. In China , the game was partially banned, but a system has now been introduced that punishes young players who play more than 3 hours a day with a worsened exp rate and deactivates certain game modes.

    #RipFortnite

The hashtag #RipFortnite made it into the Twitter trends in April 2020 , as the number of viewers on Twitch fell sharply. The users made fun of it in the form of memes and criticized the game. This was partly due to the Valorant game published by Riot Games on Twitch and partly due to the fact that Fortnite had to deal with problems and criticism from players due to updates.

    Position in e-sports

    Problems with classification in e-sports

Basically, the opinions Fortnite in are e-sports very ambivalent. On the one hand, the game has the competitive character necessary for esports, on the other hand, the random factor in the game, as in most battle royale games, is so great that many see this competitive character being undermined. After all, it is a coincidence which weapons are in which place. This makes it difficult for organizations like the Electronic Sports League to categorize it .

    First major tournaments

The first e-sports -Event with the game as a discipline was at the Electronic Entertainment Expo executed in 2018 on June 12 2018th The event goes back to the success of the biggest live streamer on Twitch with the pseudonym Ninja . Several celebrities competed against each other for a good cause at the event. Ninja and his teammate Marshmello won . The event was followed by over 600,000 viewers on Twitch.

2019 as part of the Australian Open , a tennis tournament , the first time a Fortnite with e-sports conducted tournament. The planned prize money was 500,000 Australian dollars.

    As school and university sport

At some colleges and high schools in the US, Fortnite has been recognized as an e-sport in the context of sports clubs. In the US state of Kentucky, however, a ban is planned because Fortnite is too brutal according to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

    Fortnite World Championship

    Arthur Ashe Stadium

On the last weekend of July 2019 (July 26th to July 28th) the finals of the Fortnite World Cup took place in New York City at Arthur Ashe Stadium , where the US Open starts in August . The auditions were organized by Epic in the middle of the year until September 2018. The qualifying rounds for the final took place from April 13th to June 26th, 2019. In qualifying, the players had to achieve the highest possible number of points in three hours with a maximum of ten games. They were divided into solo and duo games and into three levels. The first stage was the arena mode, the second the online open semifinals and the third stage the online open finals. 3,000 players took part in the third stage. Points were awarded for the final placement and eliminations. 100 solo players and 50 duo teams moved into the final.

The final was watched by 20,000 visitors locally and from about 1.3 million in Twitch - live stream persecuted. This exceeded the number of views of leading esports titles such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (1.15 million viewers at the World Cup) and League of Legends (1.14 million) and became the most watched esports broadcast. Over 40 million players had qualified for the tournament. The prize money for the final round was 30 million US dollars (26.8 million euros). The prize money for the entire tournament was $ 100 million (around 90 million euros) and was provided by Epic Games . This made it the esports tournament with the highest prize money.

One contestant was disqualified for allegedly looking at a viewer screen, despite claiming he was looking around based on a noise. This incident was heavily criticized on the Internet. There were also cheating incidents before that, with well over 1000 fraudsters blocked after the first weekend. The biggest Twitch streamer Ninja , who is also known for his esports, already failed in the qualification.

During the qualifying rounds, the annoying waiting times for timing were criticized. The too high rating of eliminations and the luck factor in the battle royale genre, for example in the distribution of the loot and the zone, which denies the game the possibility of an equal-opportunity e-sports title, also came under fire. In reporting the shipment came Sportschau from ARD in criticism, as the presenter showed little understanding and knowledge.

In the duo category, 17-year-old Austrian David “aqua” Wang won together with his Norwegian partner Emil “nyhrox” Bergquist Pedersen. Both received prize money of $ 1.5 million each. The best German player with the player name Derox (15 years old) made it to 8th place with prize money of 375,000 US dollars. The 16-year-old American Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf won the world championship and the prize money of 3 million US dollars. The event was accompanied by some celebrities, such as B. Drake , Harry Kane and Neymar Jr. The 2020 World Cup has been canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
