history
In 970, Emperor Otto I gave the Sausal forest (Forestum susil) to Archbishop Friedrich von Salzburg. The sweet valleys (dulces valles) were mentioned for the first time in 977, and sweet valleys is the medieval name for the western Sausal hill country, which roughly corresponds to the present-day municipality of St. Andrä-Höch.
In 1168, pastor Konrad von St. Florian acquired the landscape of the sweet valleys from Archbishop Adalbert of Salzburg.
The fact that Sausal has belonged to the West Styrian property of the Salzburg Archdiocese for more than six centuries has brought this mountainous region a fundamental change in its original landscape. This epoch ended in the 16th century. In 1595 Archbishop Wolf Dietrich gave his Leibnitz rule to Bishop Martin Brenner from Seckau. The diocese of Seckau has thus also become the landlord of the eastern part of Sausal and has remained so.
