Hairspray is a US-American - British music and dance film from the year 2007 , directed by Adam Shankman on behalf of New Line Cinema . It is a film adaptation of the popular musical Hairspray , which is based on the film of the same name by John Waters ( Hairspray , 1988). The main roles include John Travolta and Christopher Walken , who play the role of a married couple. From July 20, 2007, the film was shown successfully in English-speaking countries and was also shown in Germany from September 6, 2007.

action

Baltimore , 1962: Plump Tracy Turnblad regularly watches the Corny Collins Show on local television with her friend Penny Pingleton . When one of the actresses - "for probably nine months" - leaves the show, host Corny Collins organized a casting to find a replacement. Tracy applies, although she meets with fierce resistance from her parents Edna and Wilbur, as the two of them cannot do anything with the new musical style of the young generation. Because of Tracy's corpulence, the person responsible for the broadcast, Velma von Tussle, who is also the mother of the ambitious applicant Amber, does not give her the role. With the help of Link Larkin, Amber's friend, and Seaweed J. Stubbs, star of Negro Day , which features black teenagers on the Corny Collins Show once a month , producer and host Corny Collins discovers Tracy's talent at a school party.

Now Tracy has the engagement of her dreams: She is allowed to appear next to Link Larkin in Baltimore's most famous youth show. Velma is anything but enthusiastic about this, because she fears that Tracy, who will become a crowd favorite because of her personality , will dispute Amber's chance for the Miss Teenage Hairspray title , which is awarded annually by sponsor UltraClutch Hairspray .

When Corny Collins tells her that he wants to abolish Negro Day and instead incorporate black dancers into the daily broadcasts, her collar bursts: without further ado she cancels Negro Day and removes any appearances by black people from the program. The black performers are devastated, especially Maybelle Stubbs, the former host of Negro Day and mother of Seaweed.

Tracy initiates a protest march that demonstrates against segregation on television. She marches as one of the few whites in the front row and, when confronted with the police, hits a high-ranking police officer with her protest sign, which is exaggerated in the media. Tracy has to flee from the police and hides with Penny. But her strictly conservative mother finds her and locks her in the basement to later hand her over to the police. Her own daughter ties her to the bed. Shortly afterwards, she is freed by her boyfriend and gives Tracy the cellar key so that she can also escape and flee to Stubbs. There a battle plan is being hatched for the live broadcast of the Miss Teenage Hairspray election the next afternoon.

The black dancers take partial control of the recording studio and allow Tracy and Seaweed's sister to perform live. Amber's performance turns out to be a disaster, and Li'l Inez, Seaweed's sister, wins the contest.

background

actor

Nikki Blonsky in January 2008

For Nikki Blonsky , who were 17 and 18 years old at the time of shooting , the film was the breakthrough in 2007. She had worked in an ice cream parlor before her engagement for Hairspray and had already applied several times for the role of Tracy Turnblad in the Hairspray Broadway production, but was still too young. Ricki Lake , the actress who played the role in the original 1988 film, has a small guest appearance in the new version as a juror for "Miss Teenage Hairspray". Jerry Stiller , formerly the actor of the Wilbur Turnblad, appears in the remake as Mr. Pinky. Before Christopher Walken got the role of father, Billy Crystal and Jim Broadbent were also in discussion for it. For Michelle Pfeiffer's role Velma von Tussle, Meryl Streep or Madonna would also have come into question. Pfeiffer took a five-year hiatus after the film White Oleander (2002) and made a small comeback with Hairspray .

John Travolta , who plays a female role for the first time here, needed four to five hours a day during filming to put on a 15 kilogram fat suit and his costume over it. His face was broadened with five silicone gel pads.

Zac Efron had his hair dyed and cut for his role as Link Larkin. He also had to gain seven kilos for the role.

reception

criticism

James Berardinelli compared Hairspray in his film review with other musicals adapted for the screen such as Der kleine Horrorladen (1986) or The Producers (2005). The plot of the film is rather simple, but the characters are "adorable" and the music is "thrilling, if not unforgettable". Roger Ebert gave the film almost the top rating and justified this with the fact that the film “looks right”, “sounds right” and “feels right”. The main character's energy is more important than the plot .

The website filmstarts.de praised the film as the “best musical adaptation of recent times” and placed particular emphasis on Travolta's acting skills. The lexicon of international films judged: “Carefree musical version of the teen comedy of the same name, which has advanced to a cult film, by John Waters in 1987, whereby the focus, according to the genre, is now on singing. Not as snappy and politically incorrect as the original film, but inspired by rousing songs and a devoted ensemble. "

Financial success

Hairspray grossed $ 201 million, including $ 119 million in the United States alone. The film grossed its budget of an estimated 75 million US dollars before it even opened in European countries. For one year it was considered the third most successful musical film adaptation of the last 34 years; In the United States, only Grease from 1977 (No. 1 with $ 188 million) and Chicago from 2002 (No. 2 with $ 171 million) achieved higher box office earnings in this period . ( Ironically, John Travolta (Grease) and Queen Latifah (Chicago) played two of the actors from Hairspray in these films.) In the summer of 2008, Hairspray was featured on the ABBA musical Mamma Mia! (previous grossing: 136 million US dollars) relegated to fourth place on the list.

Deleted continuation

Due to its financial success, New Line Cinema asked John Waters to write a script for a sequel. Waters again relied on the support of director and choreographer Adam Shankman and the composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman , who should write the music for the film.

The story would have focused again on Tracy, this time in the late 1960s, amid the era of music and the British Invasion . The background story would have been the Vietnam War . Although no cast was set, New Line Cinema hoped to get a large part of the old cast. John Travolta declined early on, on the grounds that he was "not a big fan of sequels".

The continuation was announced for mid-July 2010. However, Director Shankman reported to the UK press in June 2010 that Hairspray 2: White Lipstick was no longer in development. Shaiman officially announced a little later that there would be no sequel.
