history

Parkstein (2014)

Parkstein was probably settled around the year 1000. According to legend, an imperial hunting party became aware of the beautiful basalt cone while chasing a boar, so one of the hunters decided to build Parkstein Castle there. The local castle was first mentioned in a document in 1053. In 1052, Duke Konrad of Bavaria burned the castle down. Emperor Heinrich IV had the imperial castle rebuilt at the end of the 11th century. In the following years Parkstein had many owners, including Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa and the Wittelsbach family . As was customary in the Middle Ages, the place was pledged several times. From 1421 to 1714, as a result of the Bavarian War, there was a condominium between the Electorate of Brandenburg and the Electoral Palatinate , the Parkstein-Weiden community office . The Brandenburg share came to the Duchy of Pfalz-Neuburg in 1505 and became part of Pfalz-Sulzbach in 1615 . In 1623 Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg again acquired the part of the Electoral Palatinate. In the course of the Thirty Years' War the castle fell into disrepair, and by the end of the 18th century only the foundation walls were left. In 1714 Pfalz-Neuburg sold its share to Pfalz-Sulzbach, the condominium was thus ended. The Parkstein Nursing Office came to Kurbayern in 1777 . In 1808 the Parkstein district court was relocated to the district town of Neustadt ad Waldnaab.

The place was the seat of one of the seven courts of the Community Office Parkstein-Weiden, in which the Parksteiner Landrichter ruled together with twelve jury in cases of high and low jurisdiction . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , the municipality Parkstein was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

The place Oed was incorporated in 1946. On May 1, 1950, the community Hammerles was formed from parts of the communities Parkstein and Schwand. On July 1, 1972, most of the dissolved community of Schwand was incorporated. On January 1, 1978, the municipality of Hammerles, which was spun off in 1950, came back.

Population development

Parkstein recorded rising population numbers for many years, which could be explained by the designation of building areas in a scenic location, by the close proximity to the city of Weiden and above all by the settlement of the expanding Winkler company group ( Witron , FAS, etc.). The population development has stagnated since 2000.

Between 1988 and 2018 the market grew from 1,831 to 2,301 by 470 inhabitants or 25.7%.

The basalt cone is 24 million years old and consists of nepheline basalt with olivine injections, basalt tuff and porcelain jasper . The basalt columns are beautifully shaped on the 38 m high cliff.
