Zwijndrecht is located on the north bank of the Oude Maas arm of the Rhine , just opposite Dordrecht , as well as on the Noord Canal and the Beneden-Merwede arm of the Rhine . This "three-river corner" is the most traveled waterway in the Netherlands. Zwijndrecht has a train station on the Rotterdam - Dordrecht - Breda / Roosendaal - Antwerp railway line . Subsequent to this station and in the neighboring Barendrecht is of the railway junction belonging Rotterdam only Dutch rail yard Kijfhoek . Zwijndrecht is on the A16 Rotterdam - Dordrecht motorway . Between Zwijndrecht and Dordrecht, this motorway runs through a tunnel under the water of the Oude Maas.
The industry produces u. a. Concrete; there are some shipyards. The company Van Leeuwen is a large international steel trader. Much business in Zwijndrecht thanks its existence to the proximity of the port of Rotterdam. However, there are also quite a few commuters living in Zwijndrecht who work in Dordrecht, Rotterdam, etc.
history
The name Zwijndrecht comes from zwin (channel under water only at high tide; compare Zwin near Bruges ) and drecht (ferry, ford, crossing point; compare the many other places there with names on -drecht ). When the place was first mentioned in a document in 1005 or 1006, it was still possible to reach Dordrecht from here dry-footed at low tide. At that time there were a few dikes, but these could not cope with a storm surge in 1322. Count Wilhelm III then decreed. von Holland in cooperation with the influential Mr. Hendrik (Heinrich) van Brederode in 1331 the embankment of the river islands. Anyone who carried out part of the dike or had it carried out became "Ambachtsheer" (official) of the newly won polderland . Several places arose on this, including Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht , Heerjansdam and an extension of Zwijndrecht. At that time it was not yet a real village, just the "waard" (Werder), an entire diked area. But even afterwards the area was hit several times by floods, of which the Elisabeth flood in November 1421 was the worst.
In the Middle Ages these places developed from fishing villages to farming and gardening settlements. From the 15th century onwards, Zwijndrecht developed as the center of the salt trade; later, however, mainly as an agricultural center. Around 1850, the Zwijndrecht gardeners began exporting vegetables to Great Britain and Germany. When shipping between Rotterdam and the Ruhr area across the Rhine increased sharply around 1900 , the village changed into a small industrial town. In the meantime, many large companies have left Zwijndrecht after 1975 for environmental and economic reasons.
