NGC 4286 = IC 3181 is a lenticular dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is an estimated 29 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 15,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4274 , NGC 4278 , NGC 4283 , NGC 4310 .
The object was discovered on March 13, 1785 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7 inch reflector telescope. On March 23, 1903, the galaxy was discovered by Max Wolf and recorded in the index catalog as IC 3181.
