The University of Naples "L'Orientale" ( Italian : Università degli Studi di Napoli, "L'Orientale" (UNIOR), formerly also called Istituto Universitario Orientale (IUO) and Latin : Institutum Orientalis Neapolitani ) is one of the state universities in Naples . It is the oldest university for Sinology and Oriental Studies in Europe and looks back on a long tradition in the field of studying European, Asian, African and American languages, cultures and societies.

Since it was founded, it has seen itself as a study and research center in which differences and similarities between different cultures are in the foreground. The "L'Orientale", as it is mostly abbreviated in Italian, was founded in 1732 as the "Collegio dei Cinesi", a college for the study of the Chinese language. The missionary Matteo Ripa (1682–1746) played a key role in the founding .

Although the study of oriental languages and cultures is still one of the main focuses of the university, today it consists of several faculties.

  • Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature ( Lingue e Letterature straniere )
