Josip Šimunić (born March 15, 1983 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian handball player and today's professional poker player .

Personal

Šimunić grew up as the son of two Croatians in Vienna . His cousin is the former soccer player of the same name Josip Šimunić . The pivot player played before his poker career in the highest Austrian Handball League for clubs Handball Club Fivers Margareten and HIT Innsbruck .

Poker career

Šimunić plays online under the nicknames jozinho6 ( PokerStars , Full Tilt Poker and partypoker ) , _lundi_6 (PokerStars.FR) , _Jozinho_ ( Winamax ) and jozinho1504 (iPoker) . He belongs to the partypoker team and plays there under the nickname Jozinho . Since 2009 he has been taking part in renowned live tournaments .

Šimunić won his first live prize money at Casino Seefeld . At the beginning of February 2014, he won the Swiss Poker Championship in Baden with a prize money equivalent to more than 85,000 US dollars . In February 2015, Šimunić won the high roller event of the European Poker Tour in Deauville after heads-up against Jean-Noël Thorel for a prize of around 310,000 euros . In July 2015 Šimunić was the first time in the World Series of Poker in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas successful and occurred in two tournaments of the variant No-Limit Hold'em in the money; he cashed in Little One for One Drop and the Main Event . At the end of July 2015, he finished second at the main event of the European Poker Championship in Velden for almost 120,000 euros. In August 2016, Šimunić took third place at the Estrellas High Roller at the EPT in Barcelona for almost 180,000 euros.

Overall, Šimunić has earned at least around 1.5 million dollars with poker in live tournaments.
