The area of activity of the Nazi robbery organization Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg , founded in the previous year, will be expanded to Greece in early May and to all of Eastern Europe in June.
June 5: After the occupation of Greece, the German special command Künsberg tracks down part of the Greek state treasure in Crete and transports 91 kg of gold to Athens, from where the German General Representative Günther Altenburg has it brought to Berlin.

October 31 : After 14 years of construction, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, designed and implemented by John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum , is declared complete.

Pablo Picasso paints the painting Dora Maar au Chat . The painting shows Dora Maar , Picasso's muse from 1936 to 1943.

January 18 : The Museu Marítim de Barcelona opens to visitors. Due to the Spanish Civil War , the previously planned museum opening was delayed.
