Charlotte Salomon: Self-Portrait , 1940
  • Immediately prior to her arrest on September 24 , the German-Jewish artist passes Charlotte Salomon in Villefranche-sur-Mer a tied bundle labeled property from Mrs. Moore to her familiar Dr. Georges Moridis. It contains her artistic life's work with the sheets of the series Life? Or theater? and other work. Moridis hides the remains in his house cellar on Avenue Maréchal-Joffre.
  • The Australian painter and sculptor William Dobell receives the Archibald Prize for the first time .
  • Edward Hopper paints the paintings Hotel Lobby and Summertime in oil on canvas .
