L'Isle-sur-Serein is a French municipality with 662 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Yonne department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Avallon and the Canton of Chablis .

history

The place is on the river Serein , in a loop with an island, hence the name. It was mentioned in 877 under the name Ilianencensis vicaria and was called L'Isle-sous-Montréal until the French Revolution . L'Isle-sur-Serein belonged to the Lords of Montréal and was fortified in the 14th century.
