The University of Leicester ( English University of Leicester ) is a university in Leicester [ ˈlɛstə ], England , and is now considered a research university .

16,800 students were enrolled in the 2016/17 academic year. A well-known discovery at the university is DNA analysis , developed by Sir Alec Jeffreys in 1984 . Various research facilities and centers are located at the University of Leicester, including the Stanley Burton Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies .
