Course of competition
Preliminary runs did not have to be scheduled for 32 participants, the field went into the decision run immediately.
The prerequisites for this second long distance on the track were similar to those for the 5000 meter run . At the top world-class events - apart from British Mo Farah - there have been few opportunities for European runners to penetrate the phalanx of Africans for a long time. So the Europeans were able to take the opportunity to present themselves well. In contrast to the 5000 meter run, there were already current comparative values from the 10,000 meter European Cup , held in London in June, over the longer distance . The German Richard Ringer had triumphed there, but was injured beforehand and was not one of the favorites due to his lack of training. The French Morad Amdouni was second in London, ahead of the Italian Yemaneberhan Crippa and the Spaniard Adel Mechaal, who were among the medal candidates here. The European champion from 2016 Polat Kemboi Arıkan, who started for Turkey, the vice European champion Ali Kaya, also from Turkey, and the Spanish European Championship third Antonio Abadía were also rated highly. Belgian Bashir Abdi also started fourth in the European Championship in 2012 with good prospects .
In the initial phase, the Spaniard Juan Pérez and the two starting for Turkey Kaan Kigen Özbilen and defending champion Arıkan took turns in the management work. With 1000 meter sections of just under 2:50 min, the pace was not high. A larger group of runners stayed together for a long time. This tendency continued on the second half of the route. Özbilen led the field for a long time, it even got a little slower. Nevertheless, numerous athletes had to be torn down one by one. Five runners gave up the race at this stage, including Kaya, Arıkan and Ringer.
In the further course, Abdi and the Spaniard Adel Mechaal took the initiative after Özbilen could no longer keep his own pace. However, there was only an increase in speed over the last thousand meters. With Mechaal, the Belgian Soufiane Bouchikhi, Amdouni, Abdi, Crippa, the British Andy Vernon and the Swiss Julien Wanders a top group of seven had now formed. At the beginning of the last lap, Abdi took the lead. He was followed by Mechaal, Amdouni, Crippa and Bouchikhi, while Vernon and Wanders lost contact. Morhad Amdouni was the fastest in the last two hundred meters and won just ahead of Bashir Abdi. Yemaneberhan Crippa won the bronze medal, Adel Mechaal finished fourth. Andrew Vernon caught Soufiane Bouchikhi at the end and finished fifth ahead of the Belgian. Julien Wanders came in seventh place. The Frenchman Florian Carvalho finished eighth behind him by a clear margin. The long-leading Kaan Kigen Özbilen finished tenth behind the Spaniard Juan Pérez.
A number of the runners who started here also took part in the 5000 m four days later. Morhad Amdouni won a second medal there with bronze. Yemaneberhan Crippa came in fourth.
