List of colonial buildings in East Timor
The list, which is not exhaustive, is still existing buildings in East Timor from the colonial times . This also includes existing ruins.
background
East Timor was a Portuguese Timor colony for 500 years until 1975 . Parts in the west of the country, such as Maubara and Maucatar , also belonged to the Netherlands at times . Most of the legacies of the colonial era can be found in the capital Dili , but also several in the other cities of the country. In rural East Timor, there are isolated forts, administrative buildings and churches from the Portuguese era. During the Second World War ( Battle of Timor 1942–1945) and the Indonesian occupation (1975–1999), especially during Operation Donner in 1999, numerous buildings were destroyed. Most of them have been rebuilt and renovated since independence. But some of them also expire again.
The Resoluçâo do Governo 25/2011 - Relativa à Protecção do Património Cultural ( German government regulation for the protection of cultural assets ) counts the buildings from the Portuguese and Dutch colonial times as well as from the Japanese and Indonesian occupation times as part of the cultural heritage of East Timor. The State Secretariat for Art and Culture, which reports to the Minister for Tourism, Art and Culture , is responsible for protecting the heritage .
