Luis León Sánchez Gil (born November 24, 1983 in Murcia ) is a Spanish cyclist .
Athletic career
Sánchez began his international career in 2004 with Liberty Seguros, where he was a stagiaire in 2003 . He won his first race on the international calendar for this team with a stage of the Clásica Alcobendas and his first international stage race with the Tour Down Under in 2005 . In 2007 he moved to Caisse d'Epargne and was able to win his first UCI ProTour race in 2007 with a stage from Paris – Nice . In 2008 he also won a part of the day in this race .
Due to his overall success at Paris – Nice 2009 , Sanchez was able to establish himself among the world's best. His other successes at the highest level of the cycling calendar (UCI ProTour and UCI WorldTour ) included the two victories in the one-day race Clásica San Sebastián in 2010 and 2012 (the latter for the Rabobank team , for which he rode from 2011 to 2013).
By 2012, Sánchez had won a total of four stages of the Tour de France . In 2008 he secured the victory of the seventh stage of the Tour de France . At the Tour de France 2009 he prevailed on the eighth stage from Andorra to Saint-Girons in the final sprint against Sandy Casar and won the stage. In 2011, Sánchez achieved his third day win in the Tour de France on the ninth stage to Saint-Flour. He was able to prevail against Sandy Casar and Thomas Voeckler at the finish from an escape group . In 2012 he decided the seventh stage for himself.
He achieved further victories in the ProTour and WorldTour races on one stage each of the Tour of the Basque Country in 2009 and 2016 (the latter for the Astana Pro Team , to which he switched in 2015), the Tour Down Under 2010 , from Paris – Nice 2012 and the Tour de Suisse 2019 , as well as two stages of the Tour de Romandie 2012 .
In 2008, 2009 and 2011 Sánchez was the Spanish champion in the individual time trial .
In 2012, Sánchez started at the Olympic Games in London . He finished 14th in the road race and 32nd in the individual time trial.
At the Vuelta a España 2014 , Luis León Sánchez won the mountain classification .
Doping rumors
Sánchez has been linked to the Fuentes doping scandal on various occasions by the Spanish media , but denied any contact with Fuentes. As a result, Sánchez had to admit that he worked with the also controversial Michele Ferrari in 2007 . However, he denied that doping played a role in this context . After the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad reported in detail in January 2013 about Sanchez's connections to Fuentes, he was temporarily suspended from his Belkin Pro Cycling Team until May . This suspension was lifted because, according to the team, there were no indications of connections to Fuentes. Nevertheless, Sanchez was bought out of his contract, which ran until 2015, in October 2013, which was justified by a team spokesman as follows: "His name appears in too many cases."
Others
Luis León Sánchez Gil is an older brother of the football player Pedro León . Another brother of the two, León Sánchez Gil, a former cyclist, was killed in an accident with a quad on October 30, 2005 . Since then, both athletes have dedicated their victories and goals to their deceased brother.
