About this picture

Neuried is a municipality in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg in Germany .

geography

Geographical location

Neuried is located in the Upper Rhine Plain directly on the Rhine and thus on the German- French border, almost exactly in the middle between Kehl and Lahr , only a few kilometers south of Strasbourg , a few kilometers from Offenburg.

Neighboring communities

The municipality borders the city of Kehl in the north, Schutterwald and Hohberg in the east, Friesenheim and Meißenheim in the south and the Alsatian communities Plobsheim and Eschau in the west .

Community structure

The municipality Neuried consists of the formerly independent municipalities Altenheim, Dundenheim, Ichenheim, Müllen and Schutterzell. Today these form the districts of the community and at the same time localities within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code, each with its own local council and local mayor as its chairman.

The Altenheim district includes the village of Altenheim, the Rohrburger Mühle homestead and the Altenheimer Mühle and Rheinwärterhaus residential areas. The village of Dundenheim and the homestead Dundenheimer Mühle belong to the district of Dundenheim. The Ichenheim district includes the village of Ichenheim, the Ottenweierhof homestead and the single house residential area. The village of Müllen with the lost moated castle Müllen belongs to the district of Müllen . The village of Schutterzell and the Schutterzeller Mühle farmstead belong to the Schutterzell district. Waseneck Castle, which had been abandoned, was in the Altenheim district. In the district of Dundenheim are the deserted areas of Rode and Zellhof. In the district of Ichenheim lies the abandoned Blankenmoos Castle and the Trudenheim desert.

history

Community merger

Neuried was created in the course of the Baden-Württemberg community reform on January 1, 1973 through a voluntary merger of the formerly independent communities Altenheim, Dundenheim, Ichenheim and Müllen. On January 1, 1972, the community of Schutterzell was incorporated into Ichenheim. The places Altenheim and Müllen belonged to the district of Kehl until 1972 , while Dundenheim, Ichenheim and Schutterzell belonged to the district of Lahr . With the dissolution of these two districts, today's community became the new Ortenau district .

Attractions

Buildings

  • The Protestant Church of Peace in the Altenheim district was designed by Friedrich Weinbrenner himself and built in 1813 (and restored after being destroyed in the Second World War). The building is one of the most beautiful classical churches in Baden . An exciting contrast develops between their style-typical, smooth and poorly decorated facades and the surroundings of delicate half-timbered houses . The interior of the church was extensively renovated from 2004 to 2006 and received a new organ with 30 registers on two manuals and a pedal from the organ building workshop Karl Göckel according to plans by Markus Artur Fuchs and Christoph Manuel Beysser.
Church in Ichenheim
  • In the district of Ichenheim, the Catholic Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1822 by Weinbrenner's student Hans Voss . It is one of the most formally reduced church buildings of Baden classicism. Like the old people's home church, it benefits from the monumental effect of clearly drawn structures.
  • The Catholic Church of St. Johannes in the Dundenheim district, built between 1823 and 1824, was also designed by Hans Voss. The original high altar was replaced in 1880 by a copy by Franz Josef Simmler . As early as 1860, the local scribe Markus Weißenegger had made a Mother of God altar and in 1864 a Joseph altar for the church.
  • In Schutterzell there is one of the rare simultaneous churches that are used for both Catholic and Protestant worship. It is the only church building in Baden that is used in this way by two denominations and was already planned as such together. This church, completed in 1862, is also committed to the "Weinbrenner style".
  • Altenheim has the Emilie museum bunker . It was part of the west wall and a "Regelbau 11" building. It was built in 1938 to guard the hinterland in order to prevent an attack on Offenburg. In the bunker, 27 soldiers were able to do duty in two crew rooms. The bunker also had two gas locks , an entrance defense and a separately accessible fighting room. The armament consisted of 2 MG 34s on the carriage and 2 MG for the soldiers in the trenches around the bunker. The ceiling thickness is 2 meters. The bunker was camouflaged as a residential building, where a woman, "Emilie", found shelter during the war. Filled with concrete after the war, the bunker was emptied again in 1990 by the new owners and used as a motorcycle club house. It has served as a museum since the end of 2009.

Recreation

The 2.5 km long meadow wilderness path through the Rhine meadows has existed in the north of Altenheim since 2014 .

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture and tobacco growing in particular still play an important role . With an area of around 470 hectares , Neuried is the largest tobacco growing community in Germany. The community has around 1000 jobs locally, which means that the majority of those in work commute to the surrounding cities of Offenburg , Kehl and Lahr / Black Forest .

education

Neuried has five Protestant (three of them in nursing homes, one each in Ichenheim and Dundenheim) and two Catholic (Ichenheim and Schutterzell) kindergartens . In the district of Altenheim there is a primary and secondary school with the Johann-Henrich-Büttner-Schule , in the district of Ichenheim there is a secondary and secondary school with Werkrealschule and a primary school in each of the districts of Ichenheim and Dundenheim. From the 2014/2015 school year, no primary school students were re-enrolled in Dundenheim; the primary school in Dundenheim was closed in 2018. Gymnasiums are located in the nearby district towns of Offenburg , Lahr / Black Forest and Kehl .

Geothermal energy

In 2014, the first borehole for a geothermal energy project was to be drilled in the community. This was postponed to 2016 due to an ongoing lawsuit by the city of Kehl against the deep geothermal plant and a public protest . A possible use served to supplement the biomass power plant started in 2007 as a hybrid power plant . In July of the same year, a citizens' initiative was formed in the affected communities of Kehl, Neuried, Schutterwald and Willstätt against deep geothermal drilling. The regional plan blocks the area at the planned geothermal power plant.

traffic

The places of today's municipality were supplied by the Central Baden Railway until 1959 . Today Neuried has no connection to the German rail network. The municipality is connected to Lahr , Offenburg and Kehl by bus routes operated by the regional transport company . The districts of Altenheim, Dundenheim and Ichenheim are crossed by the L 75.
