Mikhail Alexandrowitsch Kukushkin ( Russian Михаил Александрович Кукушкин , English transcription: Mikhail Kukushkin; born December 26, 1987 in Volgograd , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a tennis player who initially played for Russia and has played for Kazakhstan since 2008 .

Tennis career

Until 2006: career and first experiences as a professional

Michail Kukuschkin started playing tennis at the age of six and was coached by his father Alexander Kukuschkin until he was 17.

Kukuschkin started in 2005 in future tournaments for adults. In 2006 he qualified for a tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour for the first time and reached his first future final in Russia in November.

2007–2009: Challenger tournament victories and successes in the Davis Cup and on the ATP Tour

In August 2007 Michail Kukuschkin won two Challenger tournaments in a row: In Saransk he defeated Ivan Serhejew , and a week later he triumphed in Samarqand over Manuel Jorquera . In October 2007, Kukushkin was able to qualify for the first time in Saint Petersburg for an ATP tournament , but he lost in the first round to Mikhail Ledovskich . In the tennis world rankings he rose to position 201.

In March 2008, the third Challenger title followed in Barletta with a victory over Boris Pašanski . Subsequently, Kukuschkin won a future tournament in Russia and was then able to qualify for the ATP tournament in Barcelona in April 2008 . There he defeated the then world number 24 in the first round. Jarkko Nieminen and reached the round of 16 after defeating Pablo Cuevas , where he was defeated by Albert Montañés . In the following week, he achieved his best world ranking up to then with rank 131. At the French Open 2008 Kukuschkin tried for the first time to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament , but he was eliminated in the second qualifying round. In the summer of 2008, Mikhail Kukushkin moved from Russia to the Kazakh Nur-Sultan (Astana until 2019) and took Kazakh citizenship (just like his compatriots Andrei Golubew and Yuri Shchukin ). He was then able to play for Kazakhstan in the Davis Cup for the first time in September 2008 and contributed a single victory to the 5-0 win over the Philippines. Since then, he has won ten out of 14 singles in eight Davis Cup games. In October 2008, Kukushkin qualified for the two Russian indoor ATP tournaments in Moscow and Saint Petersburg . In Moscow he was eliminated in the first round, in Saint Petersburg he reached the second round after defeating the top 25 player Marin Čilić .

In 2009, Michail Kukuschkin was able to qualify for several ATP tournaments and also record some victories: In March 2009 he defeated Tommy Haas in the first round of the Masters tournament in Miami , and in April 2009 in Barcelona also in the first round Pere Riba . In July 2009, Kukushkin celebrated his fourth Challenger title in Penza after defeating Ilya Martschenko . He was unable to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament this year either: reaching the third qualifying round at the US Open in September 2009 was his best result in this tournament category to date. In October 2009, Kukuschkin achieved his greatest success so far at an ATP tournament: In Moscow , he survived the qualification and then reached the semifinals after winning over the top 100 players Fabio Fognini , Wayne Odesnik and Pablo Cuevas , in which he then won the event Tournament winner Michail Juschny lost.

2010–2012: Entry into the top 100 and first ATP title

The year 2010 began similarly to the previous one: Kukuschkin was able to qualify for several ATP tournaments and reached the second round in Zagreb and Houston . In July he won his fifth Challenger title in Braunschweig , benefiting from the abandonment of his opponent Marcos Daniel in the final . Thereupon Kukuschkin rose for the first time in the top 100 of the world rankings. Three weeks later, the successful title defense followed in Penza with a victory over Konstantin Kravchuk . In August, Kukuschkin lost in Istanbul against Adrian Mannarino in his seventh Challenger final for the first time a final. Nevertheless, thanks to his world rankings at the US Open 2010, he was qualified for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. There, however, he was defeated by the later quarter-finalist Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets in the first round . Just two weeks later, he retaliated for this defeat when he defeated Wawrinka in five sets in the Davis Cup and thus paved the way for Kazakhstan to beat Switzerland 5-0. Kazakhstan made it into the world group for the first time. In October, Kukuschkin reached the quarter-finals at the Thailand Open in Bangkok, but had no chance against world number one Rafael Nadal . Two weeks later, Kukushkin reached an ATP final for the first time in Saint Petersburg . With a two-set victory over the top seeded Michail Juschny , he secured his first ATP title. In the world rankings, this brought him his best place to date with rank 58.

At the beginning of 2011, Mikhail Kukuschkin lost in his Australian Open debut in the first round against the later quarter-finalist Oleksandr Dolhopolow . The following months were not very successful for Kukuschkin either: Although he was able to reach the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time by defeating Daniel Brands at the French Open , this remained in addition to two further first-round wins at the Miami Masters and in Eastbourne however, his only ATP match win. This was offset by nine first round defeats, in four other tournaments he already failed in qualifying. The only highlight was Kazakhstan's 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic in the first round of the Davis Cup world group at the beginning of March , to which Kukuschkin contributed the decisive victory over Jan Hájek . Kazakhstan then lost the quarter-final game against Argentina 5-0. In July, Kukuschkin played a tournament on the Challenger Tour in Penza for the first time this year. As in the previous two years, he reached the final, but lost in three sets against Arnau Brugués Davi . Only a week later he was in a Challenger final again in Astana , this time he beat Serhiy Bubka in straight sets and secured his first title of the year. At the US Open , Kukuschkin won in the first round against the top 50 player Albert Montañés , but then retired against Marcel Granollers, who was 31st . In the world rankings he climbed to 56th place, but fell out of the top 100 a few weeks later when he was eliminated as defending champion in the first round in Saint Petersburg . However , by reaching the quarter-finals as Lucky Loser in Basel , he made it back into the top 100 at the end of the year.

He was thus directly qualified for the Australian Open 2012 . With a five-set win over Viktor Troicki , who was placed in 19th position , he reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time and met Gaël Monfils , who was placed in 14th position , whom he also defeated in five sets. In the last sixteen he was eliminated from fourth place in the world rankings Andy Murray , who he was defeated in three sets at the beginning of the year in Brisbane . In April 2012, Kukuschkin qualified for the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo , where he reached the round of 16 by beating Florian Mayer, who was in 14th position , but had no chance against eventual tournament winner Rafael Nadal .
