Nevşehir is a province in inner Turkey . The name is derived from the Persian Nau (turkish Nev ) for "new" and Schahr (turkish Şehir ) for "city" and means "new town". It covers most of the historical region known as Cappadocia . The provincial capital is Nevşehir and is located about 215 km southeast of the state capital Ankara . The province was formed in 1954 by Law No. 6429 from parts of the Kırşehir and Niğde provinces.

The province borders in the northeast on the province of Yozgat , in the east on the province of Kayseri , in the south on the province of Niğde , in the southwest on the province of Aksaray and in the northwest on the province of Kırşehir .

Many Turkmens live in Nevşehir today . Most of the Turkmens are Alevis and most of the Turks are Sunnis .

Attractions
The city of Nevşehir is located in the center of the Cappadocia region, there are numerous sights in the province, the tuff landscape with many examples of cave architecture in Cappadocia , a large number of underground cities (e.g. in Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı ), rock castles in Uçhisar and Ortahisar , the open-air museums of Göreme and Zelve with the fairy chimneys , the Sarıhan caravanserai and much more. In the village of Gökçetoprak in Gülşehir County, the Suvasa inscription stone testifies to the presence of Luwians in the area. About nine kilometers south of Acıgöl is the rock inscription of Topada by King Wasusarma of Tabal , which was affected by fighting in the 8th century BC. Reported in the area. The grave complex of the Alevi mystic Hajji Bektash Weli is located in the Hacıbektaş district of the same name . About ten kilometers southwest of Hacıbektaş on a table mountain is the late Hittite rock inscription of Karaburna , which contains a contract between Sipi, the king, and Sipi, son of Ni, on the reconstruction of the fortress there.
The Göreme National Park with its striking tuff rock formations has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 . The Alevi Pir Hacı Bektaş Veli is buried in Hacıbektaş County .
