This article describes how to qualify for the basketball tournaments at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics .
Qualification process
The seven teams that are most successful on their continent at the 2019 World Cup (corresponding to the FIBA zones ) are qualified for the men's Olympic tournament . The two best teams from Europe and America and the best team from Africa , Asia and Oceania are qualified. Japan is automatically qualified to host. The remaining starting places will be allocated in four qualifying tournaments in 2020, in which the tournament winners qualify for the Olympic Games. Six teams will take part in each of these tournaments. The 16 best teams of the 2019 World Cup who have not yet qualified directly for the Olympic tournament are invited. In addition, there are two teams from each of the FIBA zones, with Asia and Oceania being considered together. The teams that were best placed in the world rankings after the 2019 World Cup and were not able to qualify directly for the qualifying tournaments or the Olympic Games will be taken into account .
In the women's category, the 2018 World Cup winners and ten teams from the four qualifying tournaments will qualify. Furthermore, like the men , the Japanese delegation is still entitled to a quota place. Four teams take part in each of the four qualifying tournaments. The best three are then qualified for the Olympic tournament. However, since the two seeded teams (the world champions and Japan) also have to take part in two of these tournaments, only the best two will be able to compete for the Olympic Games in these two tournaments. Europe will send the six best teams from the 2019 European Championship to the qualifying tournament. The four participants from America and Asia / Oceania as well as the two participants from Africa will take part in continental pre-qualification tournaments from 10. – 18. November 2019 determined.
In 3 × 3 basketball , the four best teams in the FIBA world rankings qualify for both men and women. If Japan is not among the top four nations in the ranking for either men or women, the better placed team from Japan will qualify (if the rankings are equal, the women’s team will qualify). Three teams each will qualify via the 2020 Olympic qualification tournament, a total of 20 teams will take part. The last quota place will be awarded at the FIBA Universality-driven Olympic qualification tournament 2020. 6 teams will take part in this tournament.
