history
Città di Castello is of Umbrian or Etruscan origin; in 89 BC It became a Roman municipium under the name Tifernum Tiberinum (Tifernum on the Tiber). The city was ravaged by the Ostrogoths under their king Totila in the 6th century . It was rebuilt as Castrum Felicitatis , the name Civitas Castelli has been documented since the 10th century . Since the early modern period, the city has been under the rule of various families, of which the Vitelli eventually prevailed (for whom Antonio da Sangallo the Younger built a remarkable Renaissance palace). Cesare Borgia incorporated the city for his father, Pope Alexander VI. the Papal States . On September 11, 1860, Città di Castello was conquered by Piedmontese troops for united Italy.
