history

The village of Protivín was founded around 1260 together with the festival of the same name. This was first mentioned in a document in 1282 as the Bohemian crown property pledged to the Prüschenk brothers von Stettenberg. Charles IV redeemed the Protivín castle in 1334 and the Majestas Carolina declared it to be of limited importance. Emperor Sigismund pledged Protívin to Ulrich II von Rosenberg . Other owners were Vojtěch von Pernstein and from 1551 Andreas Ungnad zu Sonnegg, who had the fortress rebuilt in the Renaissance style. In 1562 Ferdinand I redeemed the pledge and left Protivín together with Hluboká nad Vltavou hereditary to Colonel Chancellor Joachim von Neuhaus , who drowned in the Danube in 1565. His grandson Joachim Ulrich von Neuhaus sold Protivín to his Neuhaus dominion administrator Georg Wratislaw von Mitrowitz ( Jiří Vratislav z Mitrovic ) as a reward for his loyal service. The brewery was established in the same year. From 1660 the Riesenberger von Schwihau and 1679 the lords von Trauttmannsdorff owned Protivín. From 1711 to 1948 Protovín was owned by the Schwarzenberg family .

After patrimonial was replaced , Protivín became an independent market town in 1848. In 1850 Protivín had 1,202 inhabitants. In the second half of the 19th century, the closure of the sugar factory resulted in high unemployment in Protivín and emigration. In 1872 emigrants from Protivín, Iowa founded the Protivin settlement. In 1876 the Rakonitz – Protivín Railway was inaugurated. In 1899 Protivín was promoted to town. After the expropriation in 1948, the castle was used as a school and recreational facility.
