Patrick Michael "Pat" Rafter (born December 28, 1972 in Mount Isa , Queensland ) is a former Australian tennis player . He was number 1 in the world rankings for a week from July 26, 1999 to August 1, 1999 .

Career

Rafter won the US Open in 1997 and 1998. In 2000 he was on the verge of becoming the first Australian after Pat Cash to triumph at Wimbledon, but lost to Pete Sampras . In 2001 he lost the final there again, this time against Goran Ivanišević . Rafter also won the Australian Open doubles competition in 1999 .

In the Davis Cup he reached the final with the Australian team in 2000 and 2001, but could not win any of the finals against Spain or France .

On November 30, 2001, he played his last game in the Davis Cup against Sébastien Grosjean . Then he ended his professional career because of chronic back problems. According to the ATP, he has won prize money of $ 11,127,058.

Rafter was one of the tennis professionals who followed the serve and volley strategy. In 2002 he was named Australian of the Year . In 2006 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .

Rafter has been playing in tournaments on the ATP Champions Tour since 2008 . He celebrated his debut with a tournament victory in Graz , since then he has won two more tournaments on this tour.

In 2014 Rafter made a short comeback at the Australian Open alongside Lleyton Hewitt , but they were eliminated in the first round.
