The completely preserved zinc factory, which is under monument protection, was closed in 1981. In 1984 it was taken over by the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR) and expanded as the headquarters of the museum, which has been open since 1997.

In the 3500 square meter "Heavy Industry" exhibition there are exhibits from the 150-year history of the iron, steel and zinc industries in the Ruhr area . You can visit a steam hammer from the former Bochum association , but also molds , rollers and a steam locomotive .
