Ruch Chorzów is a football club from the Polish city of Chorzów (German: Königshütte ) in the Upper Silesian Revier . The club is 14-time Polish champion and thus together with local rival Górnik Zabrze record champions in Poland. Ruch last won the championship title in 1989. As a result of financial difficulties, the club was relegated three times in a row and has been in the fourth-class 3rd division since 2019/20 .
history
The club was founded in 1920 against the background of the popular struggle in Upper Silesia in the then Prussian town of Bismarckhütte by the sports department of the Polish plebiscite commissioner under Wojciech Korfanty as Ruch Bismarkhuta . ("Ruch" means "movement" in German.) It was therefore considered an association of the Silesian rebels . After Eastern Upper Silesia was annexed to Poland in 1922, the German place name was replaced by the Polish name in the club name - Wielkie Hajduki . In 1923, the Polish authorities enforced the merger of Ruch with the German Bismarckhütter Ballspielclub ( BBC ), which had its own stadium. A year later (1924) the abbreviation BBC was deleted from the name.
After the previously independent municipality Wielkie Hajduki was connected to the neighboring town of Chorzów on April 1, 1939, the association was called KS Ruch Chorzów . When the Wehrmacht marched into Poland in September 1939, the German occupation authorities declared it to be dissolved. In fact, however, it was only renamed: It was given a German management team and was re-registered under the old name of Bismarckhütter Ballspielclub . For him, the previous Polish national players Eryk Tatuś , Teodor Peterek and Gerard Wodarz , who had signed the German people's list , also competed in the Gauliga Schlesien . In November 1939 it was given the name of Bismarckhütter SV 99 ( BSV ), which was dissolved by the Polish authorities in the early twenties . In 1941, 1942 and 1944 the BSV was vice-master, in 1943 he reached the 4th place.
In February 1945 the new Polish authorities officially dissolved the German association. In fact, he got his old Polish name back, most of the players who had played in the Gauliga during the war stayed. The occupation period was omitted from their official biographies.
With the wave of the liquidation of traditional associations under Stalinism , the club was connected to an industrial combine in 1948 as KS Chemik Chorzów, based on the Soviet model . After merging with other company teams, it was called ZS Unia Chorzów from 1949 . It was only with the political thaw of 1956 that he was able to return to the old name of Ruch . Ruch Chorzów has been part of the Sportowa SA joint stock company since 2004.
For the 2007/08 season, the club initially received no license from the Polish Football Association , as a debt repayment plan from the previous year was presented. The already relegated team from Wisła Płock should move up . This decision was reversed shortly afterwards, so that the club played for the first time since 2003 in the Ekstraklasa again . On November 18, 2008, the association announced that he was free of debt. The greatest club success after the turn of the millennium was the move into the Polish Cup final in 2009, which was lost in the Śląski stadium with 0: 1 against Lech Posen . Also in 2012 they could again reach the Polish Cup final, but were defeated in Kielce with 0: 3 Legia Warsaw . All in all, it was one of the best seasons in the last few decades, as they were runner-up in the Ekstraklasa as well as reaching the cup final and only narrowly missed the big coup with just one point behind Śląsk Wrocław . Unfledged by these successes, the 2012/2013 Ekstraklasa season turned out to be a roller coaster ride and it was only on the last day of the match that they were able to stay up. Although they were relegated as 15th, they could still hold the class due to the direct duel they won against GKS Bełchatów and the withdrawal of their license from Polonia Warsaw . The following season they finished third and qualified for the Europa League, in which they failed in the playoff round to Metalist Kharkiv .
On June 2, 2017, the club rose again in a turbulent season in the second division. The club's license for the coming season had previously been withdrawn. The fall into the third division followed in the 2017/18 season . Ruch ended the 2018/19 season in last place and is thus relegated again and is now fourth class.

Fans
KS Ruch Chorzów is known as the Upper Silesian Club , especially for young people who, with and through the team, acknowledge their Upper Silesian identity (through banners, chants, flags, etc.). The fans of Ruch usually carry flags with the German word "Oberschlesien". The display of these flags in Polish stadiums was banned in 2009 by the Polish Football Association (PZPN ).
Stadion
Ruch Chorzów plays in the Miejski Stadium , which was built in 1935 and has a seating capacity of 10,000 people. There are plans for a new stadium to be built in the future, but these are a long way off with the club's currently precarious financial situation. For important international matches, the footballers from Ruch switch to the Śląski stadium . That stadium has a capacity of 47,202 seats.
