story
In 1541, the conquistador Jorge Robledo founded a place called Antioquia near today's Peque , which was relocated in 1542 near today's Frontino. In 1545, on the occasion of Robledo's trip to Spain, during which he was appointed marshal , this place received a coat of arms and the title Ciudad de Antioquia (German city of Antioquia), issued by King Philip II. From there, Robledo founded the village of Villa de in 1546 Santa Fe at its current location, at the confluence of the Río Cauca and the Tonusco . After the execution of Robledo by the competing conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar , Juan de Rodas became governor of Antioquia in 1546 and merged the city of Antioquia with the Villa de Santa Fe on the site of the latter. The old Antioquia was destroyed in 1555. The Bishop of Popayán raised the Villa de Santa Fe to a parish in 1547 . The settlement became the capital of the Antioquia region in 1584 and has been officially called Santa Fe de Antioquia since then. On August 8, 1590, Santa Fe de Antioquia was officially elevated from Villa to Ciudad (city). From the beginning, Santa Fe was a mining village whose economic basis was the gold mines .
A cathedral was built in 1799. The associated Archdiocese of Santa Fe de Antioquia was established in 1804 by Pius VII . In 1813 Antioquia declared itself a sovereign and independent state with Santa Fe as its capital. After Greater Colombia gained independence , Santa Fe was replaced as the capital of Medellín in 1826 . From 1851 to 1855, the city was again the capital of a province when the province of Antioquia was briefly divided into three provinces but was soon reunited.
Its legacy of colonial architecture led to the city center being declared a National Monument of Colombia in 1960.
economy
The basis of the economy in Santa Fe is agriculture . The main products are coffee , corn , kidney beans ( frijol ), tamarindo , tamarillo and potatoes . There is cattle , horse and pig breeding and keeping.
In addition, tourism is an important source of income. In 2006, a new west tunnel was opened, which shortens the distance and travel time from Medellín, which has made Santa Fe de Antioquia more attractive as a destination for weekend trips, but also for summer vacations. Construction activity is currently experiencing a significant expansion based on the expectation of increasing numbers of visitors and overnight stays.
landmarks
The preserved colonial architecture gives the relatively small city the flair of a place where time has stood still.
Outstanding sights from the colonial ensemble are the cathedral , the Archbishop's Palace, the City Hall, the Plaza Mayor , the Museum of Religious Art and various stately homes such as the La Casa de las dos Palmas ("House of the Two Palms") and the Casa Negra .
Another attraction built at the end of the 19th century (1887–1895) is the Puente de Occidente suspension bridge ("Bridge of the West"), which spans between Antioquia and Olaya over the Cauca and is also a Colombian national monument.
education
In Santa Fe de Antioquia there is a location of the Universidad de Antioquia . The location was opened in 2006.
