Santiago "Santi" Cazorla González (born December 13, 1984 in Lugo de Llanera ) is a Spanish football player who is under contract with Villarreal . He is also a Spanish national player and has twice been European champion .

Career

society

Born in Real Oviedo's youth , Cazorla took his first steps in professional football at Villarreal CF , where he has been under contract since 2003. He scored four goals in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup and was used twice in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League without scoring. In his early 20s, Cazorla was already a regular in the first division.

For the 2006/07 season Cazorla moved to the newly promoted Recreativo Huelva , where he received a contract until June 30, 2010. He came to 34 league appearances in which he scored five goals.

For the 2007/08 season Cazorla returned to Villarreal. In the following four seasons he developed into a regular player and came to 127 league appearances in which he scored 23 goals.

For the 2011/12 season, Cazorla moved to Malaga FC , where he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2016. He was used in 38 league games and scored nine goals.

For the 2012/13 season Cazorla moved to Arsenal in the Premier League . There he scored his first goal on matchday three after a template by Lukas Podolski in the game against Liverpool FC .

At the end of the 2017/2018 season , Cazorla left Arsenal after the expiring contract was not renewed. Due to an injury, he had not been used for over a year and a half. Cazorla played his last game on October 19, 2016 against Ludugorets Razgrad. His injury resulted from a hospital germ, in the meantime an amputation was considered.

For the 2018/19 season , Cazorla returned to Villarreal. He played 35 league games (30 times from the start) and scored 4 goals for the club, which had long been relegated. He was also used 10 times (2 goals) in the Europa League , in which Villarreal FC reached the quarter-finals.

National team

Cazorla played seven games for his country's U21s . For the European Championships in 2008 in Austria and Switzerland , Cazorla was nominated by coach Luis Aragonés for the senior national team . In the quarter-finals against Italy he was substituted on in the second half and was one of Spain's most successful shooters in the subsequent penalty shoot-out . In the final of this European Championship he was also substituted in the second half and celebrated the biggest title of his career to date with the victory over Germany . At the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine , Cazorla was substituted on during the group stage in the game against Ireland and in the quarter-finals against the French selection and won the title again with his team.

Cazorla played his last international match for the time being in November 2015. He was therefore not part of the squad for the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Championship . In June 2019, Cazorla returned to the national team under Robert Moreno and made his first international match in almost four years.
