The eastern Feldmark is crossed by the Oste-Hamme Canal , which comes from Klenkendorf and was previously important for moorland shipping , and flows into the Oste in the local area.
There are no larger lakes in the local area of Spreckens. Most of the smaller lakes or ponds are on private property.
geology
The landscape of Spreckens has geest areas rising up to 11.7 m and wide lowlands with flat and raised bogs . The bottom of the Geest consists of glacial deposits such as boulder sands and gravel as well as boulder clay and clay . These deposits are interspersed with rock from Scandinavian mountains, which was brought there by glaciers during the ice ages . The elevations form compression and dam moraines .
Today the Geest areas are mostly used as arable land.
history
Primeval times
Traces of settlement as well as various graves such as stone, hill , flat graves and finds of stone, metal and clay objects indicate a settlement that already existed in the Paleolithic and Mesolithic .
From the Neolithic to the Bronze Age , several cultures emerged, which changed over the centuries. These were the megalithic culture and the individual grave culture , which ultimately developed into Germanic tribes , such as the Chauken tribe who lived around the birth of Christ . Its land was already connected to the Roman Empire under the emperors Augustus and Tiberius . Roman writers like Tacitus and Plinitus described the Chauken as a noble and freedom-loving people.
Modern times
The village of Spreckens is an ancient settlement that forms part of the extensive Oste-Hamme lowlands, the geologically so-called Bremervörde valley.
The village consists of two main districts to the north and south of the Sünderbeck valley with individual farmsteads scattered around in the "Vie", "Behind the Great Field", on the "Ridder flags", "Heidfeld" and "Vor den Theilen". The former canal bailiff and Gerkensche inn (now Brandt farm) were located on the Oste-Hamme Canal. In the northern part of the closed place were three of the oldest four courtyards and the so-called Brink. The southern part includes the residential areas and new settlements that resulted from the divided fourth old courtyard. In these parts of the settlement there is otherwise a typical village structure with a juxtaposition of residential, service and commercial operations. The main parts of the Spreckens district are flat elevations north and south of the Sünderbeck valley with the corridors, Großes Feld, Stüh, Streckbarg, Heidfeld, Ridderflaggen, potato farms, Steinberg, Falkenhütte, Hübscher Berg, as well as the Spreckenser Moor, an extensive high moor with the Rugenbarg rising from it , the western Ostetal with the “Vie”, the “Winnerwiese”, the Wisselbruch and the “Theilen”, and finally the Sünderbeckal with the “Reen” corridor.
The first written records about Spreckens are from 1272. The name for the settlement at that time was "Spreckensete" and around 1500 consisted of four farms. Over time, the farms were classified as Vollhöfner, Kölner, Halbhöfe and Brinksitzer .
On March 1, 1974, Spreckens was incorporated into the city of Bremervörde.
Crash of an Avro Lancaster during WW2
On July 29, 1944, an Avro Lancaster LL687 with British emblem, a British-made bomber belonging to the 408th Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force , crashed in the local area of Spreckens, about 300 m southeast of the cemetery . The identification of the bomber read EQ-M . The only survivor of the eight-man crew consisting of the shooters, pilot, radio operator and bombardier was David Scott, who served as a flight engineer near the cockpit.
To commemorate the crash, a memorial plaque made of stainless steel, financed by donations, was unveiled on July 29, 2017, 73 years after the crash, during a memorial service at the cemetery in Spreckens. The ceremony was attended by the descendants and relatives of the victims as well as veterans of the British and Canadian armed forces, members and reservists of the German Armed Forces, various officials and active members of the Canadian Air Force.
Origin of name
The name "Spreckens" and its oldest form "Spreckensete" probably go back to the Anglo-Saxon era . "Spreck" or "Spreckel" denote a gap or a valley channel which can refer to the valley of the Sünderbeck. The old Saxon word "set" (also Sitti-an ) stands for seat or residence.
As a conclusion, it is assumed that the place name means "settlement on a valley channel".

Culture and sights
Sports
Spreckens has a green area of around 0.35 hectares near the village community center, on which there are two football goals. The green area is used for events, privately for soccer games and by the volunteer fire brigade and the youth fire brigade for competition exercises. (see Spreck Volunteer Fire Brigade )
Regular events
Regular events are the annual rifle festival and the summer festival that takes place in summer and is organized by the volunteer fire brigade. The continuation of the custom of the Pentecostal tree planting is to be mentioned as an event of the village youth .
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
With regard to road traffic, Spreckens is connected to the regional transport network. The most important traffic artery is the Bremervörde-Gnarrenburger Kreisstraße K 102 leading through Spreckens , which was initially laid out as a moor dam in the 18th century to develop the large moors between Bremervörde and Gnarrenburg and expanded as a road after 1900. The road continues via Worpswede, Lilienthal to Bremen. An ancient path is located south of Spreckens, in the Fahrendorf district of Fahrenberg, where a state glass factory was located in the 18th century. Waterways are or were the Sünderbeck, which was expanded to form the Fahrendahl-Fahrendorfer Canal, which originally served as access to the aforementioned glassworks on the Fahrenberg and as a peat drainage canal for the Moordörfer Fahrendorf and Fahrendahl, as well as the Oste-Hamme Canal and in particular the Oste. On the Oste there is an ancient shipping pier, the "Holthu" (Holzhude). It is a wood loading point that probably existed in prehistoric times.
As an ancient Geestdorf, Spreckens also had a “ Brink ” , like most old Geestorte tarts . This is or was in the northern village on the north side of the main road. On one part there is now a residential building and on the corner part a rest area with benches has been set up after the fire station had stood there for years. In earlier times the Brink was common land and was used as a horse pasture, especially during the harvest season. There were then gatherings of the local residents and all sorts of popular amusements (dancing and games). In more recent times, village craftsmen have been able to build houses on the brink of the villages. They were called "Brinksitzer". The Spreckenser Brink was probably assigned to the Buckschen, now Steffensschen Hofe, at the coupling.
Public infrastructure
The power supply is guaranteed by Stadtwerke Bremervörde GmbH. The water supply is provided by EWE AG , which obtains the drinking water from the Bremervörde water association (formerly Bremervörde water supply association). In Spreckens, wastewater is mainly disposed of in a decentralized manner using small sewage treatment plants . A connection to the central wastewater disposal was planned for the year 2000. A sewage system was set up for the "Auf der Rehn" settlement.
At the moment there is the possibility to connect his household to the sewage supply. Households that operate a sewage treatment plant can have a connection installed on the property as a precaution. (Status: 2015)
Public facilities
Apart from the multi-purpose hall and the fire station, there are no more public buildings . The schoolhouse went into private ownership after the local school was closed. The village came to the Bremervörde School Association in 1965. Ecclesiastically, Spreckens belongs to the St. Liborius parish of Bremervörde . Post and train station is also Bremervörde.
development
The development of the village of Spreckens was not only shaped by agriculture . A commercial development began about 270 years ago with the construction of a glass factory in Fahrendorf. The construction of the Oste-Hamme Canal brought further development. With the railway connection in 1898, agricultural production also improved. In line with the latest population development, two residential areas have been created in the southern part of the settlement, adjacent to the existing development (Auf der Rehn / Heidfeld). In the northern part of the village, on the street “Am Sandstrich”, a village community center has been built in Spreckens . In the 1960s, a special kind of facility was built in Spreckens: a wildlife park with fallow deer, wild boars and mouflons, which was closed again.
There are individual commercial operations (insurance companies, restaurants, landscaping, a night club, aquarium construction and a transport company). Agriculture (pasture and arable farming) is no longer the main source of income for the population. There are eight full-time and two part-time businesses.
Associations and public institutions
Volunteer fire brigade Spreckens
In 1936 the two villages of Engeo and Spreckens merged to found the volunteer fire brigade Spreckens. In 1936 a syringe house was built in the center of Spreckens, which was completely modernized in 1975 in order to meet the requirements of the fire brigade at the time. The fire brigade's first important purchase was a fire sprayer. Equipped with a motor pump, hose reels , jet pipes and fire shoes , the comrades took action against fires in the area. In 1966, the decision was made to purchase a new type T portable pump vehicle from the manufacturer Volkswagen "in the course of progress and technology" .
In 1976 the youth fire brigade Spreckens was founded. A new LT 31 portable pump vehicle from the manufacturer Volkswagen had been an integral part of the fire service since 1978. The current emergency vehicle is a VW Crafter body, a portable pump vehicle that was purchased in September 2010.
The volunteer fire brigade of Spreckens is organized in the Bremervörde District Fire Brigade Association .
Motorsport community Spreckens
The Motorsportgemeinschaft Spreckens e. V. (short form MSG-Spreckens) is a local racing club founded in 1977 and a member of the NAVC . Every year there is a stubble cross , a public racing event on a harvested grain field, the "stubble" or stubble field . There owners of autocross vehicles compete in a circuit race . There is a separate race with a cross-kart for children and teenagers. The MSG-Spreckens currently has 224 members. (As of January 2016)
Spreckens shooting club
The Schützenverein Spreckens e. V. was founded on September 13, 1952 by popular request. In the following years, the entry in the register of associations took place in 1954 and the youth department was founded in 1956. After the territorial reform in 1973, construction of the village community center began. At the same time, work began on setting up a shooting range at the old venue for the annual shooting festival . This was sold in 1977 and replaced by a new shooting range at the village community center. In 1988 an air rifle stand was built and in 2001 the association was awarded non-profit status. The rifle festival takes place every year at the village community center.
