al-Hajj (sura)

Al-Hajj ( Arabic الحج, DMG al-Ḥaǧǧ 'The Pilgrimage') is the 22nd sura of the Koran , it contains 78 verses .

There are different views on the dating of the sura, as it contains different sections that on the one hand take up the themes of the Meccan period. On the other hand, there are verses with a clearly later background: the situation shortly after the emigration , the situation after the failed attack by the Quraish on Medina in 627 or the refusal of the Meccans to allow the Muslims to make a small pilgrimage to Mecca in 628. Both common editions of the Koran such as the Cairin edition of the Koran as well as Western Islamic scholars place the sura in the Medina era. Most of the parts consist of the material of the Meccan message, but the sura "gets its main meaning from the Medinic pieces occurring in it" ( Nöldeke / Schwally ).

After a first section on the resurrection of the dead and the retribution of good and bad deeds, verses 25 to 41 discuss problems in connection with the pilgrimage of Muslims to the Holy Mosque in Mecca, with the followers of the right faith ( Hanif ) as well as the history of the Kaaba come up. The final section from verse 42 describes the negative attitude of the unbelievers , the conflicts between the messengers of God or prophets and Satan , the omnipotence of God, and concludes with provisions on the prescribed posture during prayer and on jihad as a commitment to God .
