al-ʿAnkabūt
Al-ʿAnkabūt ( Arabic العنكبوت al-ʿAnkabūt 'The Spider') is the 29th sura of the Koran , it contains 69 verses . Its title refers to verse 41, in which there is a parable of the spider and its "house" as an indication of the weakness and vulnerability of the spider web .
There are different ideas and traditions about the dating of the sura. Most Muslim commentators think of the end of the third Meccan period (620–622), with the exception of the first eleven verses, which are said to have been written at the beginning of the stay in Medina , i.e. between 622 and 625. In a tradition from Ibn Abbas the whole sura is called Medinic. There is also the view that the whole sura is medine except the first eleven verses.
After three mysterious letters , the sura begins with a meditation on the meaning of faith and the trials that believers are subjected to. Verses 14 to 40 contain a brief outline of the story of the prophets : Noah , Abraham , Lot , Shuʿayb as the prophet of Madyan , ʿĀd , Thamud and finally Qārūn and Pharaoh as opponents of Moses . The parable with the spider (verses 41-44) serves as a transition to the final section, in which thoughts about the message of the Koran, the retribution of God and his benefits are discussed.
The final verse mentions jihad in the following words:
“But for those who struggle for our sake, we will lead our way. God is with those who are pious. "
