About this picture

Werben (Elbe) , also Hanseatic City of Werben (Elbe) , is a town in the north of the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt and belongs to the Arneburg-Goldbeck community . Werben is the third smallest city in Saxony-Anhalt and one of the 20 smallest cities in Germany (as of 2014).

geography

Werben (Elbe) is located in the east of the Wische on the left bank of the Elbe northwest of Havelberg on the southern route of the Elbe cycle path in the Altmark . In the Räbel district , a combined Gier motor ferry crosses the Elbe at river kilometer 422.2 and creates a connection to Havelberg.

City structure

The districts belong to Werben (Elbe):

The Neu-Werben colony is the only district on the right bank of the Elbe. The Gnevsdorf receiving water runs through it , through which the mouth of the Havel was artificially relocated down the Elbe in order to reduce the penetration of the Elbe floods into the lower Havel.

Neighboring communities of Werben (Elbe) are:

The place appeared as Wiribeni iuxta Albim (Werben an der Elbe) for the first time in the written sources, and according to the chronicle of Thietmar of Merseburg († 1018) King Henry II negotiated several times with Slavs. The bishop does not give a date for this; Research places these meetings in the period between December 1005 and April 1006. Due to its location at an Elbe crossing, the place was of importance for trade and crafts from an early stage. In 1056 a battle between Saxons and the Liutizen took place near the castle Pritzlawa , in which the Saxon contingent was almost completely destroyed. The Margrave of the Nordmark , Wilhelm, died here on September 10, 1056 in the battle against the Lutizen. Werben became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1358 and remained so until the beer war with Elector Johann Cicero in 1488. During this time the Elbtor was built. During the Thirty Years War Werben was taken over by the Swedish troops due to its strategic location , and the Swedish King Gustav-Adolf had the Schwedenschanze built. With it one ruled the Havel entrance and the Elbe as the most important transport artery - see also: Battle of Werben .

From 1898 to 1971 Werben was connected to the railway network via the Kleinbahn Goldbeck – Werben (Elbe) .

The name changed on December 23, 1997, when the city was renamed from Werben to Werben (Elbe) . According to other sources, the name change didn't take effect until January 1, 1998. Since June 1, 2008 the city has had the addition of the Hanseatic City to its name .

Order of St. John

The city has the oldest founding of the Order of St. John on North German soil. After a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1158 and 1159 , Margrave Albrecht the Bear transferred the income of the Werben Church to the Order in 1160, including all accessories, including six Hufen Landes, to the St. John's Hospital in Jerusalem. He determined that the proceeds “would be sent to the poor who are in the hospital in Jerusalem every year”.

A commandery was subsequently built next to the church . The Lamberti Chapel is the oldest evidence of the order's building activities. The Commandery was initially responsible for Saxony , the Mark Brandenburg , Pomerania and the Wendland . Later she was the administrative center for the Balley Brandenburg.

Incorporations

On November 1, 1928, the manor district of Domain Werben , which had been formed from the Kommende in 1810, was merged with the town of Werben on the Elbe .

On 25 July 1952, the city was from the district Osterburg in the district Seehausen reclassified. On July 2, 1965, it was reclassified to the Osterburg district . The community Räbel was incorporated on October 1, 1965 after Werben. The city of Werben, however, specifies 1962 as the year of incorporation of Räbel. On February 1, 1974, the municipality of Wendemark was incorporated into the city of Werben. On May 1, 1984, Wendemark was again spun off as a separate municipality from the city of Werben, whereby the three former Wendemarker residential areas Delkerhof , Engelshof and Roggehof were listed as districts in Werben in 1986. They later came back to Wendemark as places to live.

By a non amendment agreement, the municipal councils of the community decided Behrendorf (5 May 2009), and the Hanseatic City of Werben (Elbe) (26 May 2009) that their communities and added to a new community named Hanseatic City of Werben (Elbe) are combined . This contract was approved by the county as the lower local supervisory authority and came into effect on January 1, 2010.

The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 1217 inhabitants of Werben around 27% belonged to the Protestant and around 4% to the Catholic Church.

The evangelical Christians are now part of the parish Advertise and since July 1, 2018 supervised by the parish area Seehausen-Advertise in church district Stendal in Propst Sprengel Stendal Magdeburg of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . The first Protestant pastor in Werben was Augustin Brinkmann, who was called in 1539. The oldest surviving church registers for advertising date from 1594.

Today the Catholic Christians are looked after by the Catholic parish of St. Anna (Stendal) in the Stendal deanery of the Magdeburg diocese. Originally they were also looked after by the parish in Stendal, and from 1917 by the Filiavikarie in Osterburg. On March 29, 1928, a Catholic branch vicaria was established in Giesenslage . On November 1, 1948, the associated branch parish was established. In 1951 even a Catholic Sacred Heart Chapel was designated in Werben.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on April 30, 1997 by the Magdeburg Regional Council.

Blazon : "In silver, a golden armed red eagle, above his head a rising golden moon, raised by a six-pointed golden star."

The colors of the city are red and white.

The red eagle in the coat of arms of Werben is the Brandenburg eagle . How crescent and star got into the coat of arms is unknown, and their meaning is also controversial. Some deny these signs any meaning, others associate them with the Johanniter Commandery. The first coat of arms from the 13th century already contains the red eagle. Crescent and star appear in the coat of arms only after the Reformation .

The municipal council of the newly formed Hanseatic City of Werben (Elbe) decided on January 19, 2010 to adopt and continue the coat of arms and flag of the incorporated city of Werben (Elbe). This was approved by the district on February 1, 2010.

flag

The flag was approved by the county on October 19, 2009.

The flag is striped red and white (1: 1) (landscape format: stripes running horizontally, lengthwise format: stripes running vertically) and centered with the municipal coat of arms.

Up to 20 pairs of storks come to the stork city in spring and regularly move into their nests on the roofs of the old city. Werben describes itself as the city with the most storks in Germany. Although there are u. a. with the nearby Rühstädt places with more breeding pairs, but these are not cities.

Architectural monuments

Only a few remains of the medieval city wall with its five gates have survived. Magnificent, even if the battlements were heavily restored in 1907/1908 and 1997/98, the Elbe Gate, which was made of brick around 1460/70, shows itself on the north-eastern edge of the city with its pointed arched passage next to the round, crenellated tower (today the local history museum with viewing platform). The name of the builder, Stephan Buxtehude, is also mentioned (probably for the gate structures) in Stendal and Tangermünde . The most important architectural monument is the medieval parish church of St. Johannis with its remarkable furnishings.

Of the buildings of the commandery only one (now profaned) chapel remained; the simple construction of the 13th century shows the Johanniterkreuz in the gables. The chapel of the Hl.-Geist-Spital from the early 15th century was also used for secular purposes: from its role as a warehouse in the 18th century, it retained the name "Salt Church". Numerous residential buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries characterize the cityscape, but many of the half-timbered houses that are under monument protection are in danger of falling into disrepair.

On the sports field , a plaque commemorates the communist worker sportsman Heinz Steyer from Dresden, who was forced into punishment battalion 999 and murdered in 1944 for cooperating with partisans .

Several art-historically significant, medieval brick village churches can be found in the incorporated districts of Werben:

  • St. Nikolaus , an unusually large late Romanesque village church from around 1220 in the Berge district
  • Dorfkirche Giesenslage , a late Romanesque village church from the first quarter of the 13th century that has largely been preserved unchanged,
  • Räbel village church, a small Gothic village church from the end of the 13th century.

Events

The Biedermeier summer has been taking place on the first weekend in July since 2006 . The background is that the medieval Hanseatic city was largely destroyed by wars and that today's location has largely preserved the appearance of the 18th and 19th centuries.

After a long ban during the GDR era, the “Schützengilde zu Werben 1750 e. V. “now every year in August the shooting festival.

On the occasion of anniversaries of the local associations, public events and festivals are regularly organized.

economy

The city of Werben is characterized by emigration and high unemployment. Local craft businesses are available. The city relies on tourism and newcomers. There is a small marina and an outdoor swimming pool on the outskirts of the city.
