William Nelson (politician, 1784)
William Nelson (born June 29, 1784 in Hyde Park , New York , † October 3, 1869 in Peekskill , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1847 and 1851 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Nelson was born in Hyde Park about a year after the War of Independence ended . He attended community schools and graduated from Poughkeepsie Academy . Nelson studied law , was admitted to the bar, and then began practicing in Peekskill in 1807. He served as District Attorney in Counties: Putnam , Rockland and Westchester for 30 years . During that time he served in the New York State Assembly from 1820 to 1821 and in the New York Senate from 1824 to 1827 . He was also a judge on the Court for the Correction of Errors between 1824 and 1827 . Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .
In the 1846 congressional elections for the 30th Congress , Nelson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Joseph H. Anderson on March 4, 1847 . He was re-elected once and then dropped out after the March 3, 1851 Congress of.
After his time at Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer. He died on October 3, 1869 in Peekskill and was then buried in Hillside Cemetery . At this point the civil war had ended for about four years.
