The Eurovision Song Contest 2008 is the 53rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be hosted by Serbia. The semi-finals will be held on 22 May 2008 and the final on 24 May 2008 in the capital, Belgrade. The Belgrade Arena,[3] venue for the Contest, is among the largest indoor arenas in Europe, with total capacity of more than 20,000 seats. Serbia gained the right to host the Contest after Marija Šerifović won the 2007 Contest in Helsinki, Finland. The host broadcaster will be Radio Television of Serbia.

Svante Stockselius, executive supervisor of the Contest for the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that the competition's format may be expanded to two semi-finals in 2008 or 2009.[5] On 28 September 2007 it was announced that the EBU had approved the plan of hosting two semi-finals in 2008.[6] In an interview Stockselius revealed more details about the new format; each semi-final will only be aired live in countries that are taking part in that semi-final, and only viewers from those countries can vote. Broadcasters may show a recording of the semi-final they are not entering. The semi-finals will be webcast live through Eurovision.tv.[7]

On 14 September 2007, the Mayor of Helsinki handed over the "Eurovision keys" to the Deputy of Belgrade. This ceremony is meant to be a tradition from now, and the ring contains a key from every city that has ever hosted the competition.[8] Cosmetics supplier Wella will become the official partner of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008.[9]

RTS ran a competition that led to the creation of the 2008 Contest's branding, logo and the stage.[10]

RTS picked this stage to:

  • Represent an association with Belgrade and Serbia.
  • Represent native identities, history and modern themes, symbols and universal recognised messages.
  • Ensure that the stage can be seen from all angles of hall and subordinated for TV broadcast.
  • Have settings of all new electronic possibilities including some movable parts of stage.[11]

Participants

Below is a list of possible entrants. A limit of 45 participating countries has been set by the EBU.[12] Confirmed participants are in bold, the host country in italics.

Semi-finalists

Possible new and returning participants

  •  San Marino - SMRTV expressed an interest in joining the contest, however it is still unknown if they are going to enter in 2008.[13]
  •  Luxembourg - OGAE Luxembourg hosted a convention on 22 September 2007 aiming to raise enough interest for a local broadcaster to enter once again.[14]
  •  Monaco - Monaco indicated that a return is possible in 2008.[15]
  •  Slovakia - STV is interested in returning to the contest in 2008, depending on the costs involved.[16]

Possible withdrawals

  •  Montenegro - After failing to win a place in the final in Helsinki with their debut entry as an independent country, the national broadcaster has not publicised any plans to participate again.[17]

Non-participants

  •  Algeria - It is very unlikely this country will participate, since it doesn't recognize the State of Israel.
  •  Morocco - The TV station 2M TV has shown interest in joining the EBU but not in 2008.
  •  Lebanon - Télé Liban is facing the third year of its ban from Eurovision in 2008 after withdrawing after the deadline in 2005. The next time they will be able to re-apply is 2009, provided they commit to broadcasting the Israeli entry.
  •  Libya - LJBC has now confirmed that the country will not be entering any time soon, claiming that the Eurovision does not fit into their typical programming.
  •  Tunisia - Tunisian television ERTT confirmed that it would not participate due to governmental request.[18]
  •  Vatican City's television station broadcasts only religious services, so will never enter the ESC.

Other EBU members

These countries are eligible to participate as EBU members, but have not expressed any interest in taking part:

National finals

A complete and detailed list of national selections will be published after the official list of participants is announced in December 2007. Uncertain dates are in italics.
