Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it immediately before the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should:
    • not be marked as stubs;
    • contain more than 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables); This is a suggestion, not a firm rule; it is rather silly to oppose an article solely because it is 1490 characters in length.
    • cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
    • be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable).
    • Articles on living individuals - these must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
  • Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    • interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    • short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    • neutral,
    • definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    • preferably cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
    • attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
    • already in the article; and
    • relevant to the article.
    • formatted as [[Image:image name |right|100x100px| Description]] and placed directly above the suggested fact.
  • Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have 1,500+ character non-stub text that brings out interesting, relational, and referenced facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please sign the nomination with the create/expand date and the name of the creator(s) or creator and nominator, such as:

  • Both versions state there was no fighting, so they are equally true or false. According to the last paragraph of Aleutian Islands Campaign#Allied response, the brigade went to Kiska but the Japanese were gone. So I wouldn't consider that to be fighting. There are numerous, reputable sources for this claim. Is confirmation from the Nobel Prize committee (which is far enough in the future as to be inaccessible) the only acceptable source? If the answer is "yes', then the article acn be modified and the DYK nomination rewritten.Silverchemist (talk) 20:54, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
From Nobel Prize#Nomination and selection: "The names of the nominees are never publicly announced, and neither are they told that they have been considered for the Prize. Nomination records are sealed for fifty years. In practice some nominees do become known. It is also common for publicists to make such a claim, founded or not." Aside from "sole/first nomination" not being provable, nomination itself is not especially notable, since all it takes is one maverick university professor e.g. Bob Dylan for Literature I'm not suggesting that is the case with Fraser-Reid, but I advise a rewrite. jnestorius(talk) 22:58, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the input. I have re-written part of the article. How is this?

Why is that unusual?--Carabinieri (talk) 21:56, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is not usual to spend so long in hospital. Also, hooks don't need to be "unusual", just interesting. Majorly (talk) 23:55, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
One cent or two: articles listed here don't automatically make it to DYK, there's a selection. If a DYK admin tells you your first hook isn't good enough compared to the sea of articles you can see around here, it'd be more constructive for you to take the hint and provide alternative hooks, on the same or another angle. Quick example below. — Komusou talk @ 18:30, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why is than unusual?--Carabinieri (talk) 22:08, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the linked article is not Tom Tancredo (which is not new) but Tom Tancredo presidential campaign, 2008; violates WP:PIPE#Intuitiveness. jnestorius(talk) 22:47, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

:Nothing is violated, I've done this many times before. I really don't understand how somebody (unless completely ignorant and biased of American politics) would not think that this is unusual. How often do you hear a Republican candidate for president actually tell everybody who he would support in the other party? Especially the most conservative candidate running choosing the most liberal (by Congressional records). And plus something doesn't have to be unusual to be on DYK, just interesting. I find it very uncivil for you to go asking everybody "Why is than unusual". To tell you the truth that doesn't make any sense and didn't really merit a response. I ask for an apology because I am tired of being treated like garbage by international users like you.--STX 23:27, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK ...that "international" is a put-down in Texas, USA? ;-) — Komusou talk @ 19:01, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's civil to ask "Why is that unusual?", especially as a standard question throughout the page. The question is about content not the contributor, and I can't think of a more pleasant way to ask the question. It can also be civil to answer the question or dispute its importance, as in sentences 1, 3, 4, and 5 of the previous post. Art LaPella (talk) 04:19, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But being unusual doesn't qualify something for DYK, it is supposed to be something that is interesting that will draw people to an article, the above hook accomplishes that.--STX 05:24, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • On the content, you had an interesting angle, but on the form, it needed rewrite: to avoid Easter egg links, and to be more directly intelligible to "international users"; someone from CA, UK, or AU isn't supposed to know all about Obama and catch the hook.
  • If you need to explain a hook here, it means you need to tweak it. And in the end, that'll send more readers to your article, including "international users".
  • Carabinieri's question was just a question, not an accusation, and I have seen it very commonly asked here for non-obvious hooks. Accusing the DYK admins just doing their job to "treat you like garbage" is unlikely to improve your chances of being selected. Improving the hook from the perspective of an English-speaking layman who has not yet read the article is I think more constructive. — Komusou talk @ 19:01, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I apologized to the above user and have some different suggestions:
Tweaking text, with some more precise wikilinks and consistent capitalization:
  • ...that the title for Family Guy episode Brian Goes Back to College was originally meant to be Brian goes back to college and Stewie goes with him, but was changed for comedic reasons? Self nom —Qst 21:25, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's not catchy enough. Plus isn't there a policy somewhere on Wikipedia that forbids this sort of single episode articles? --293.xx.xxx.xx (talk) 09:06, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • It is interesting enough, I believe. I have had another DYK from a totally different episode of Family Guy about what it was originally meant to be called. There is no policy which prohibits individual television programme episodes, there are hundreds for The Simpsons, Family Guy and many other TV programmes. Please let administrators handle these. —Qst 20:23, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that the Income tax in Colombia must be payed by all the citizens with total anual income higher than 63 million pesos (about 31500 dollars), and The tax represents 38.5% of the total income? --self-nom by Koven.rm (talk) 19:10, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not sure I understand what is so catchy? Every country has a tax rate. 38.5% is not one of the highest in the world. Something else to use in the hook, instead? Archtransit (talk) 19:04, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks RC! However, the rule is that there has to be a five-fold expansion. We could probably use the same nom, a little tweaked for Boydell Shakespeare Gallery, however, which I created on the 19th and am continuing to expand. I have suggested a lovely Fuseli image as well for that. Awadewit | talk 00:54, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Changed image to Puck - looks better small. Awadewit | talk 13:32, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • By the way, just to be clear Boydell Shakespeare Gallery was created on the 19th, so there is no conflict with the rules on that article. Originally, John Boydell was nominated. I think this fact has become obscured in the changes to the hook. Awadewit | talk 01:13, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that forest brother Alfred Käärmann was hiding for 7 years from Soviet officials, spent 15 years in Siberian prison camps and upon return his passport was stamped "annulled", effectively making him homeless within the Soviet Union? Article created by Martintg (talk · contribs). -- Sander Säde 06:13, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • ...that after forest brother Alfred Käärmann hid for 7 years from Soviet officials, spent 15 years in Siberian prison camps, had his passport was stamped "annulled" and was banished from Estonia until 1981, his beloved woman he met back in 1941 was still waiting for him when he finally returned? • OR: ...that in the 1659 English play The English Moor, a woman rejecting a blackface make-up was told that "an Ethiopes face" is as much "Heaven's workmanship" as "the fair'st Ladies"? -- November 18 new article by User:Ugajin; Nom by — Komusou talk @ 17:05, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that 16th century English diplomat Francis Bryan disgraced himself by throwing eggs and stones at the common people during a mission to Paris? -- November 18 new article by User:Mrabbits; Nom by — Komusou talk @ 16:38, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • First one hooked me better; though the article is unclear on what "disgrace" means: in the eyes of modern history, or of his contemporaries? Second hook has 2 problems: (1) "Cromwell" suggests Oliver more than Thomas (pace the date); (2) unclear whether Anne was the cousin of Francis or Thomas. jnestorius(talk) 14:53, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Article's been updated to explicit he was disgraced in the eyes of his contemporaries. I tweaked the 2nd hook above to "Thomas Cromwell" and "of the former's royal cousin". I too prefer the first of my two hooks: as a transient factoid, I think its slapstick will induce more people to go read the rest. Of course, the second, "serious" hook could be more apt as a purely standalone, permanent piece – but I doubt it'll send more people check the article. — Komusou talk @ 16:28, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that the Renaissance oil painting Madonna with the Long Neck (pictured) is so called because the Madonna's neck is stretched "like that of a swan"? (art+nom by ŴôôDéļf 09:13, 18 November 2007 (UTC))[reply]
    • This is nearly all one quote, are there other opinions or views? Victuallers (talk) 11:26, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Per Victuallers' comment, I'm not sure this qualifies, as there is very little actual content aside from the quotation. - Revolving Bugbear 12:54, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • I have reduced the quote, please review. --ŴôôDéļf 16:02, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • ...that the Australian Idol 2007 winner's single, "Here I Am", received heavy criticism from the performing grand finalists, Matt Corby and Natalie Gauci? — created by Someone111111, expanded later on and nominated by RaNdOm26 (talk) 09:03, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Why is that unusual? What was the criticism?--Carabinieri (talk) 21:55, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • It is, because it is not usual for the performing artist to criticise the song they would soon be releasing as their own single. Normally, the artist would be satisfied of the song they would perform. They criticised that the song was too different from their musical style. RaNdOm26 (talk) 16:02, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not certain whether Judge Fee revoked his citizenship. Was it one of the charges against him or just an incidental finding of fact? How about...that American federal judge James Alger Fee ruled in 1942 that Minoru Yasui was not a U.S. citizenship because he used to work at the Japanese consulate and therefore could be jailed for curfew violations that apply only to non-citizens? • Oh, of course! I was just offering my opinion as I was reading through the entries, you don't have to take my advice. :o) Any other hook, just suggest it below here as an alternate. I tried to think of one but couldn't, lol. ArielGold 10:44, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • This article is a bit short (around 1400 characters). Could it be expanded at all? (Perhaps that's all that's known...) Rigadoun (talk) 16:32, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Need a better hook that doesn't simply repeat the title of the book in other words. --74.13.126.161 (talk) 05:47, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if owing to this difference in versions - [1] - the article qualifies for DYK? Thank you, K a r n a (talk) 00:28, 17 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It does not. Not a five-fold expansion.--Carabinieri (talk) 20:07, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I managed to read the article. It told me very little that I couldnt find at the excelent Powderfinger article. I doubt there are 1500 characters of genuine article here... does this undermine the band's notability? Victuallers (talk) 18:52, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Other than infobox and other ancillary information, I don't know what you're talking about. The music video, release and lead info are all unique to this article. The infomation in the Powderfinger article was lifted from this (though, by me, but was contributed second after creating this article). --lincalinca 06:45, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But why is this fact unusual?--Carabinieri (talk) 22:02, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not uncommon for politicians in a democracy to lose a re-election after holding a seat in the legislature for many years. --74.13.126.161 (talk) 05:32, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Is 20 years the record for Maryland? --74.13.129.228 (talk) 15:10, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The loss in 2002 was not for a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates but the State Senate. This hook is misleading. --74.13.129.228 (talk) 15:18, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Besides transporting military people and refugees, what else do General G. O. Squier-class transport ships do during & after WW2? A special trip to AU? --74.13.126.161 (talk) 04:54, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

::(alternative suggestion) ...that the General G. O. Squier-class transport ship USAT General Omar Bundy (pictured) vanished under mysterious circumstances while flagged as the SS Poet? (I dunno, only other thing I could glean from the article that wasn't military related.)--293.xx.xxx.xx (talk) 08:45, 23 November 2007 (UTC) Nevermind. --293.xx.xxx.xx (talk) 08:46, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
