Chemical compound
Chloralose is an avicide , and a rodenticide used to kill mice in temperatures below 15 °C. It is also widely used in neuroscience and veterinary medicine as an anesthetic and sedative .[1] Its anesthetic action is due to positive allosteric agonism of the GABAA receptor , and as such is capable of affecting humans. Symptoms of exposure would be similar to the presentation of a benzodiazepine overdose and my be fatal but mechanical ventilation reduces the risk of death after exposure to near zero with prompt emergency medical care.
Chemically, it is a chlorinated acetal derivative of glucose .
It is listed in Annex I of Directive 67/548/EEC with the classification Harmful (Xn )
