Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If there's a suitable image, place it after the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion. Also, self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should be over 1,500 characters (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references), cite sources (these sources should be properly labelled, that is, not under an "External links" header), be no more than 5 days old (unless it was under 1,500 characters, and has been expanded five-fold or more within the last five days), and should not be marked as stubs. Articles with good references and citations are preferred to those without.
  • Suggested facts should be:
    • Interesting to draw in a variety of readers around the world.
    • Short and pithy (under about 200 characters).
    • Neutral.
    • Definite facts, mentioned in the article.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • Suitably freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) as the main page by policy can only have freely licensed pictures.
    • Attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px wide) resolution
    • In the article already
    • Relevant to the article
  • Proposed lists should have two things to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults) and (ii) have non-stub text that brings out interesting relational facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Your entry may miss out on the front page if you don't respond to reasonable objections.

How about:
Very little text in this article; mostly lists and tables. howcheng {chat} 17:11, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Does this mean "the Sarmatians in Kurgan (city)", "the Sarmatians in Kurgan" [culture], or "the Sarmatians in kurgans" (meaning burial mounds, in which case the k isn't capitalized)? Art LaPella 05:48, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The article is a bit short, at around 1,300 characters. Rigadoun (talk) 20:29, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
References are part of an article if I'm not mistaken. Artaxiad 01:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
True, but #Suggestions states: "Proposed articles should be over 1,500 characters (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references)". Art LaPella 02:21, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll let others rule on the f-word, but the article is over 5 days old and the hook/suggested fact is way over 200 characters. See #Suggestions. Art LaPella 16:36, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • ...that the Grotto at Goldney House (pictured), Bristol, which dates from 1739, is encrusted with over 200 species of shell brought back from the Caribbean and African waters? self-nom --— Rod talk 11:57, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I get 1299 words, so it's a bit short. Can we use the image? Rigadoun (talk) 19:46, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • I'll try to add some more words. The pic is not mine but licenced under creative commons so I don't think it's allowed on the front page.— Rod talk 20:21, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • CC-BY-SA images are fine. howcheng {chat} 20:47, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
          • I've found another source & added more on dimensions and decoration. I'm not sure how you count characters (rather than words) with all the references included, but I hope it's now long enough?— Rod talk 21:54, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
First, copy the article's text, excluding the infobox and references. Next, copy to Microsoft Word or the equivalent. To duplicate the 1299 figure (in history) I deleted the table of contents and headings. Click "Tools", then "Word count" and use the spaces included figure. Now I get 1752. It seems that the information from the article you nominated, Education in Himachal Pradesh, should be merged into Himachal_Pradesh#Education. This doesn't qualify -- it's a copy-paste job of an entire section in USS Greeneville (SSN-772). howcheng {chat} 06:41, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If the qualifying article is Gesine's Confectionary and Gourmet Market, it should be 1500 characters long to qualify (see #Suggestions). It's now 649 the way we count them. Also, the qualifying article should be printed in bold, the word "of" is missing after "owner", and I don't understand linking Jesse G. James to Jesse James when Jesse G. James has his own article mentioning both. Art LaPella 02:06, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think image works well with the hook. I was kind of expecting to see Antarctica and having all this grass in the image kind of throws me for a loop. howcheng {chat} 17:04, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This does not qualify because it is split off from Tropical cyclone rainfall climatology. All of the new content is lists. It also needs an introduction (see WP:LEAD). howcheng {chat} 23:10, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • I bolded the new article and added some links. However, it's only about 1,000 characters. Rigadoun (talk) 16:15, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • I added more information about Sani, and in the process found she was not "Indian," as she claimed, but Jamaican.--Skb8721 21:59, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • I've now added a lot more information about Sani's life and carrer. --Skb8721 03:43, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Articles created on March 13

This doesn't qualify. It was created a long time ago and wasn't a stub 5 days ago. howcheng {chat} 18:10, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it was "list of Final Fantasy VIII characters", which was just a list of the minor characters in the game. Now, it includes main characters, those minor characters (many removed, trimmed, and sourced, unlike their origin), creation and influence, merchandise, reception and criticism, etc. Essensially, this combines information from that list (which is the edit history seen before March 13), 6-8 merged main character articles, new sections and material, extensively trimmed material, references, and information once on the main article. I just moved names to contain history of where some of this information came from, but it incorporates new info as well as info taken from 8+ articles, including the list that I moved. If I knew it would've caused a problem, I would've just created it seperately and used redirects, like with Music of Final Fantasy VIII. Unfortunate; I thought it would introduce people to a more...encyclopedic take on fictional characters and show how it should be handled. — Deckiller 17:28, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And it's very well done, but DYK is to highlight new articles (or significant expansions of stubs). I think you might consider sending this to Wikipedia:Good article candidates instead. howcheng {chat} 17:52, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's already there, and thanks for the complement. I assumed this qualified for DYK because it was more or less a new article combining elements of numerous articles with new elements. If I had just copied and pasted my sandbox to the new article space and redirected the character list to this new article without using the move function, it would have qualified? Or does DYK discourage merged superarticles as a whole? — Deckiller 18:01, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if there's any objection to merged super-articles specifically, but since DYK is supposed to highlight brand-new articles and new content. For this reason, we don't allow new articles that are split off from other articles, for example. I would say that a merged article is along the same lines. howcheng {chat} 19:10, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for the clarification. — Deckiller 19:11, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to see more information about public reaction to the play or something. Right now, it doesn't sound like it was a particularly important or popular play, so notability is somewhat borderline. To compare it to the US, the impression I get from it is off-off-off-Broadway. howcheng {chat} 06:38, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comment. I agree that there's a disappointing lack of references for how the previous performances of this play went down. However, I would say that the London fringe is a vibrant source of excellent theatre and that it corresponds to a single "off" before the "Broadway" :) . This play also goes one better than most fringe theatre since it has since been published. The playwright, as well, appears to be a popular children's author, even though I'd never heard of him.
Guess I'll see if there is a stronger public reaction to the upcoming production, expand the article with that and some more on the "weighty" themes of the play and submit it again. GDallimore (Talk) 16:32, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This doesn't qualify. Assuming that Ferenc Rákóczi is the nominated article, it was created a while ago and wasn't a stub just five days ago. howcheng {chat} 18:13, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh good Lord. Did I ever screw this one up. I intended to nominate Rákóczi's War for Independence. Sincere and rather embarrassed apologies! Try this:

459 character hook/suggested fact. See #Suggestions. Art LaPella 23:13, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Now it's shortened to 356 characters. #Suggestions says "Short and pithy (under about 200 characters)."
But it is under 200 char. Am I counting wrong? Dr.K. 00:42, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see it was a comment on a previous version.
I now count 256 characters, using Microsoft Word Word Count including spaces, which they may or may not accept. I thought 7 days was too old anyway. Art LaPella 00:52, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I never counted the spaces. As for the seven days I know, but let's see. Thanks for the help. Dr.K. 01:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Still over 200 but under my usual fudge factor for "about". Thank you. Art LaPella 01:44, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
