The fifth 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also known as the ADAC 1000 km race, Nürburgring , took place on June 7, 1959 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
For the first time in the history of the 1000 km race, the racing team of the German sports car manufacturer Porsche came to the Nordschleife as the leader in the sports car world championship. After Wolfgang von Trips and Joakim Bonnier finished third in the first race of the season, the Sebring 12-hour race , the team led by Fritz Huschke von Hanstein had their first victory at the Targa Florio with Edgar Barth and Wolfgang Seidel celebrated for Porsche in the world championship.
In the championship, Porsche held 12 points and was four points ahead of second-placed Scuderia Ferrari . For the racing team Ferrari had Dan Gurney and Chuck Daigh the race at the Sebring International Raceway won.
The race
The year before , Aston Martin came to the Nordschleife with only one world championship point and then scored their first win of the season thanks to the success of Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham . In 1959, David Brown's team had not scored any points at all before the endurance race in the Eifel .
In 1959, Jack Fairman was Moss' partner. Fairman drove a race at the Nürburgring for the second time and his lap times did not come close to Moss'; sometimes he was up to 25 seconds slower than his teammate on one lap. Moss therefore sat in the cockpit for the longest possible time on race day. He drove the DBR1 / 300 for 37 of the 44 laps to be driven . When Moss handed the car over to Fairman for the first time, he had a comfortable lead over the factory Ferrari 250TR59 run by Phil Hill / Olivier Gendebien and Tony Brooks / Jean Behra . But Fairman got off the track in the Brünnchen section and got stuck with the rear axle in a ditch. The victory seemed lost, because the Ferrari passed. Fairman, however, knew what to do. He broke a lath out of a fence and used it to lift the 800 kg car back onto the road. Exhausted, he made it back to the boxes and Moss took over from him. Moss took the lead again and at the end of the race he and Fairman had a lead of 41 seconds on the Ferrari of Hill and Gendebien.
Umberto Maglioli and Hans Herrmann won the class for sports cars up to 2 liters for Porsche. Success in the 1.5-liter sports car class also went to a Porsche 718 RSK . The Swiss duo Heini Walter / Arthur Heuberger won ahead of the works Porsche owned by Wolfgang von Trips and Joakim Bonnier.
Fatal accident
On the eighth lap there was an incident that ended with the death of the Swiss racing driver Fausto Meyrat . On this lap, the leader Stirling Moss ran into Meyrat's Auto Union RS1080 in the Kesselchen section and wanted to overtake the slow vehicle. The Swiss driver drove in the middle of the road and, due to poor visibility, overlooked the blue flags that indicated that a faster vehicle was about to overtake. With two wheels in the grass, Moss overtook Meyrat on the right. Meyrat lost control of the Auto-Union. The vehicle came off the road and overturned several times. Meyrat was seriously injured and taken to the Adenau hospital, where he died two days later. After the race, the allegation surfaced that Moss had hit the Meyrats car while overtaking and thereby triggered the accident. There was never any confirmation of this claim. Nevertheless, Meyrat's widow sought a case of manslaughter against Moss, which, however, was not brought by the German authorities.
