Almuñécar emerged from a Phoenician settlement called Sexi or Hexi , even today some of the inhabitants still call themselves Sexitanos . An aqueduct has been preserved from Roman times, when Sexi first belonged to the province of Hispania Ulterior and later to Baetica . Strabo reports that the city name has also become the trade name for salt fish.

The fishing village flourished under the Moorish rule, now under the nameالمنكب / al-Munakkab . According to legend, the surviving Umayyad ʿAbd ar-Raḥman is said to have set foot on Andalusian soil for the first time in 755 .
