The old coffee roastery on Cappenberger Strasse in Lünen

The Alte Kaffeerösterei is a former coffee factory in Lünen (North Rhine-Westphalia) at Cappenberger Strasse 51 in the Lünen-Nord district . The oldest building in the complex, which consists of ten partial plots and several buildings, is the house built in 1906 by the former manufacturer Ignaz Woestmann.

In 1924 Woestmann founded the largest coffee roasting company in Lünens at the time under the name VELUNA (VEreinigte LUener NAhrmittelwerke). There were two other coffee roasters. In addition to coffee beans , malt coffee and grain coffee , known colloquially as "Muckefuck", were also produced. The roastery mainly supplied cafes in Lünen and the surrounding area, but also as far as Düsseldorf and Cologne . During the global economic crisis , the company ran into economic difficulties and production was stopped in 1932. Since then, the buildings have served various purposes, including the production of shoes and clothing in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, the site was converted into a commercial center and, after a change of ownership, the building complex was extensively renovated by means of a foreclosure auction in 2010. Since then it has housed commercial and cultural venues, including shops for art, commerce, culture and a café, but also commercial spaces.

The old coffee roastery is included in the route of industrial culture - brine, steam and coal (No. 10) and in the route of industrial culture - bread, grain and beer (no. 21) of the themed routes created by the Ruhr Regional Association . The occasion for the inclusion of the old coffee roastery in two of the themed routes was the eventful history of industry and use of this industrial ensemble as a unique selling point on the part of the Ruhr Metropolis . The Alte Kaffeerösterei was the only venue in Lünen that was part of the ExtraSchicht in 2013 and 2014 .
