The Upper Tideelbe floodplain is a nature reserve in the Hamburg districts of Wilhelmsburg in the Hamburg-Mitte district and Billwerder , Spadenland , Ochsenwerder , Kirchwerder , Moorfleet and Tatenberg in the Bergedorf district .

The nature reserve is around 246  hectares . It is partly part of the FFH area "Hamburg Lower Elbe". The area, which is looked after by the nature conservation association GÖP and the Angelsport-Verband Hamburg eV, has been under protection since 2010 - initially as a nature reserve of around 222 hectares "Auenlandschaft Norderelbe" (date of regulation: February 16, 2010) today's size expanded and renamed.

The nature reserve is located in the Elbe river splitting area and stretches along the Norderelbe from the federal motorway 1 in the north to the Bunthäuser Spitze in the south, the Dove Elbe to the Tatenberger Schleuse and on the north bank of the Süderelbe to the nature reserve " Heuckenlock " and includes part of the Elbe with the dike foreland as well as the outer dyke areas Spadenländer Spitze and Kreetsand, which were created in 2001 through back dikes. In Moorwerder , the nature reserve is limited to the undeveloped outer dike areas. Furthermore, the filter basin and the bird protection trees and the part of the wooden harbor ditch south of the A1 on the southern Billwerder Island are included in the nature reserve. At the confluence of the Georgswerder Schleusengraben, which is connected to the North Elbe via a pumping station, the “ Rhee ” nature reserve follows . With the expansion of the nature reserve in 2016, additional outer dike areas in the districts of Ochsenwerder and Kirchwerder were included in the scope of the nature conservation ordinance.

The nature reserve is from the tide -influenced Elbe - the tidal range here is up to 3.5 meters - embossed with their flood plains. The course of the river is accompanied by remains of alluvial forest . The outer dike areas are taken up by extensive fallow grassland with tall herbaceous vegetation and reed areas . There is a mudflat area on the Spadenländer Spitze . On the 42-hectare Kreetsand, around 30 hectares of tidal flat water areas are planned, in which more tidal flats are to be formed. Another dike relocation on Ellerholz, like the Kreetsand a former rinsing area , is basically possible.

The filter basins on Billwerder Insel are former sedimentation basins of the Elbe water filter works Kaltehofe of the Hamburg water works . The four pools have not been used since 1991 and are only poorly maintained. They are surrounded by woods and fallow land.

The floodplain Norderelbe is habitat for numerous rare in some animal and plant species, including marsh water star , Alisma lanceolatum , swan flower , marsh ragwort , marsh marigold and occurring only on the Elbe Wiebelschmiele (also swamp Schmiele ) and feint , asp and numerous other fish species, sea frog , small woodpecker , marsh harrier and rough-skin bat . A specialty is the hemlock water fennel , which only occurs here. A cormorant breeding colony, the only one in Hamburg, has settled in the bank area of the filter basin . Also come z. B. Golden Oriole , Bluethroat , Tasmanian Tit and Kingfisher . The white-tailed eagle uses parts of the nature reserve as a feeding habitat.

The Elbe Tideauenzentrum Bunthaus, a nature conservation information center of the nature conservation association GÖP - Society for Ecological Planning eV, is located on the Bunthäuser Spitze on the edge of the nature reserve. Parts of the river splitting area and the nature reserve can be seen from the lighthouse gallery on the Bunthauserspitze, which is used as a viewing platform .
