Balıkesir is a Turkish province in the west of the country. In the west it borders on the Aegean Sea , in the north on the province of Çanakkale and the Marmara Sea . Balıkesir has been a metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ( Büyükşehir belediyesi ) since 2012 and consists of 20 İlçe.
More than a million people live in the province, of which the provincial capital of the same name, Balıkesir, has around 350,000 inhabitants.
Administrative division
The province is divided into 20 İlçe , which resemble a district in terms of settlement in rural areas and a district in urban agglomerations. In 2012, the old municipality of Balıkesir was dissolved and a large city municipality ( Balıkesir Büyükşehir Belediyesi ) was established in its place . For this purpose, the old urban area was divided into several municipalities ( Belediye ) and with these and neighboring municipalities, the metropolitan municipality was formed. Successive was founding and dissolution of municipalities and overpasses of village ( Koy ) organizations in Mahalle organizations a Einräumigkeit made by local government (by the Belediye) and state government (through the İlçe), the field of individual communities that with the result the state administrative district of the same name. After an administrative reform in 2014 (2013?), The area of the metropolitan municipality includes the entire province. The municipal self-government organs at provincial level ( İl Meclisi ) were dissolved and their responsibilities were transferred to the administration of the metropolitan municipality. The province thus became a purely state administrative district.
