The Archdiocese of Santa Maria ( Latin Archidioecesis Sanctae Mariae , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Santa Maria ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Santa Maria in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil .
The diocese was founded on August 15, 1910 by Pope Pius X. from what was then the diocese of São Pedro do Rio Grande , today's Archdiocese of Porto Alegre; the first bishop was Miguel de Lima Valverde .
