The Archdiocese of Santa Maria ( Latin Archidioecesis Sanctae Mariae , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Santa Maria ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Santa Maria in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil .

The diocese was founded on August 15, 1910 by Pope Pius X. from what was then the diocese of São Pedro do Rio Grande , today's Archdiocese of Porto Alegre; the first bishop was Miguel de Lima Valverde . Territories have been given up several times to establish dioceses, such as Passo Fundo (1951), Frederico Westphalen (1961), Cruz Alta (1971) and Cachoeira do Sul (1991).

On April 13, 2011 it was by Pope Benedict XVI. raised to the archbishopric with the seat of a metropolitan .
