Boxing world championships
The amateur boxing world championships are the most important competitions in amateur boxing after the Olympic boxing competitions . They are organized by AIBA . The first world championship took place in 1974 in the Cuban capital Havana .
The championships were initially held every four years until 1986. The 5th competitions took place three years later, in 1989 in Moscow . Since then, they have been held every two years. After a reform of the weight classes , their number was reduced from 12 to 11.
The most successful participant so far is the Cuban heavyweight Félix Savón with six gold and one silver medal . The most successful participant so far is the Indian Mary Kom with five gold and one silver medal . With 67 gold, 30 silver and 24 bronze medals, Cuba is by far the most successful participating nation.
Junior World Championships have also been held since 1979 . In addition, cadet world championships were held every year from 2001 to 2007, with the exception of 2004 . In 2008, the first competitions of the youth world championships were held in the Mexican city of Guadalajara , which have been held every two years since then. Women's youth and junior world championships have existed since 2011.
