Crush ( pronunciation ? / I ) (English for about. " Crush ") is the seventh studio album by the US rock band Bon Jovi . It was released five years after their last studio album, These Days . It is one of the best-selling albums of 2000 and brought the band back to success in their home country. The album was best known for the single It's My Life . Audio file / audio sample

Emergence

After the band had contributed the song Real Life to the soundtrack of the film EDtv in February 1999 , the music producer Bruce Fairbairn , who should have produced the album , died on May 18, 1999 . It so happened that the band only met in the fall of 1999 in Jon Bon Jovi's home studio Sanctuary Sound II to work on the new album, for which the band members Bon Jovi and Sambora had already written 60 songs. Originally Jon Bon Jovi had conceived the album as a solo work, but then wanted to work with Sambora. The producer's choice fell on Luke Ebbin , who had been recommended to the band by John Kalodner . The work took about four months. On this album, more than ever, there are different songwriters who do not belong to the band, while the long-time Bon Jovi author Desmond Child is "only" represented with one song on this album.

The title of the album was, as is often the case with Bon Jovi, very controversial: First it was to be called Sex Sells and later One Wild Night , before the ambiguous title Crush was chosen.

On January 7, 2000, Rolling Stone broadcast a live 12 hour webcast showing the band at work in the studio. At another webcast in February, the band played an exclusive concert, of which, for example, the song Someday I'll Be Saturday Night on the single for It's My Life was released as a video.

The band went on tour with the album in 2000 and 2001. The official tour motto was: "Crush 2000 - Triumph the Earth".

Musical style

In contrast to the previous album These Days and Jon Bon Jovi's solo album Destination Anywhere , this work has a “consistently more positive, light-hearted mood”, which definitely justifies comparison with Keep the Faith and Slippery When Wet . Richie Sambora confirmed that this was on purpose:

"... We wanted to make a good-humored rock'n'roll record, and we managed to do that."

- Richie Sambora : musikexpress interview, June 2000

There are various sound effects and loops on the album, most of which go back to co-producer Luke Ebbin . The use of such elements was rather unusual for Bon Jovi in the past. Loops were increasingly found on Jon Bon Jovi's album Destination Anywhere .

Information on individual songs

It's my life

Remaining singles

In the same year, Say It Isn't So and Thank You for Loving Me were released as further singles in Germany . The latter was inspired by the movie Rendezvous with Joe Black , where Brad Pitt says these words towards the end of the film. The video was shot at the Trevi Fountain in Rome in Italy .

Furthermore, in 2001 - but as part of the following live album One Wild Night Live 1985-2001  - the title One Wild Night was released as a single. The decoupled version is a remix that was included on said live album. It was created once more through the band's collaboration with Desmond Child and was called One Wild Night 2001 .

Each single was released in different versions with different bonus material.

More songs

The ballad Save the World is also related to a film. It was originally supposed to appear in Armageddon , but was made obsolete by Aerosmith's I Don't Want to Miss a Thing . This is why Jon Bon Jovi kept the song for the album and only contributed Mister Big Time , a collaboration with Aldo Nova , to the film's soundtrack.

The song I Got the Girl is not about a love affair, but refers to Stephanie Rose (born May 31, 1993), the first daughter of Jon Bon Jovis.

While Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen from Mars was inspired by David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust , She's a Mystery was created in an old castle in southern France that Jon Bon Jovi was visiting for a songwriter meeting.

On Next 100 Years , in addition to solos by Richie Sambora and David Bryan, you can hear a full string orchestra with 64 people. The regular album ends with the band members discussing what would happen if James Brown were with them. Then the bonus track If I Could Make a Living Out of Loving You begins .

Songs like Ain't No Cure for Love , Stay and Welcome to the Good Times didn't make it into the album.

reception

Reviews

The musikexpress praises the album as qualitative pop:

“It's just pop music. And that's just not supposed to be a reproach. Quality is not just in any niche. "

At the same time, however, it is criticized that between songs that "immediately give the impression that you have known and loved them for a long time", "all sorts of irrelevant things" have accumulated. However, this is so common with Bon Jovi.

Matthias Breusch from the rock-hard magazine, on the other hand, praised the band's return to their musical roots and awarded 7 out of ten possible points:

“After around eight years, Jon Bon Jovi is once again presenting his target group with an album that is not predominantly dominated by acoustic guitars and reveals a much more rocking list than on his less spectacular solo excursions ( One Wild Night ), although guitarist Richie Sambora only rudiments plays in the foreground. The design and style mix of the first band album since Keep the Faith seem clear and well-calculated, to which a busload of co-star songwriters from Bryan Adams to Desmond Child will certainly have contributed. In addition, Jersey-Jon's lifelong Springsteen admiration makes itself felt several times ( Just Older , I Got the Girl ). It's My Life , which has already been decoupled in advance and has been pounded around the world , has already proven to be the perfect successor to eighties goods such as Runaway or Livin 'on a Prayer and is currently taking the fan club circles of Backstreet Boys teenagers by storm. But Crush also has a lot to offer beyond this little treat . For example the heavily Beatles / ELO-heavy Next 100 Years , whose orchestral instrumentation sounds as if Paul McCartney or Jeff Lynne personally conducted the ensemble. Or the intense power ballad 'Save The World'. If you subtract the three yawners Two Story Town , Mystery Train and I Could Make a Living Out Of Lovin 'You , the bottom line is a successful "comeback", which as a mainstream fan you can easily get into “

Sales successes

Crush achieved double platinum in the US, Canada and Germany. It took the top position in several European countries. In the Austrian charts , the album stayed at number 1 for 7 weeks and 38 weeks in the charts and was awarded platinum.

The album is still the best-selling Bon Jovi album of the new millennium. In total, the album is said to have sold over 11 million times worldwide.
