As a class 403 a to be ICE 3 belonging ICE - high speed variant of the Deutsche Bahn referred. In contrast to its sister series 406 and 407 , it is only capable of one system and therefore only runs in Germany and to the neighboring Basel SBB train station .

The 50 200 m long unit trains are eight cars formed and used on train operation in July 2000th With a maximum authorized vehicle speed of 330 km / h, the electric multiple units can reach speeds of up to 300 km / h in regular operation.

The trains took over the designation series 403 from the now decommissioned 403 electric multiple units of the former Deutsche Bundesbahn .

variants

The 403 series was ordered as part of the ICE 3 concept, which was commissioned in 1994.

First series

The first series of 37 multiple units for domestic traffic has been in regular service as ICE 3 at Deutsche Bahn since 2000.

When the trains were delivered, they had 141 seats in three 1st class cars and 250 seats in four 2nd class cars. As a result of the renovation in 2002, the number of seats in 2nd class was increased and the number of seats in 1st class was reduced.

Second series

In mid-January 2001 a letter of intent was signed to procure 13 more ICE 3 trains. As part of a two billion DM program to modernize the long-distance fleet, the procurement of 13 trains for inland traffic worth around 500 million DM was planned. Two years earlier, DB had announced that it would purchase 50 additional ICE 3 trains. The trains were to be used on the new Cologne – Rhein / Main line from 2004. A manufacturer for the new trains had not yet been determined at the beginning of 2001. The order followed in 2002.

In autumn 2005 the DB AG refused to accept the multiple units of the second series that had already been approved by the Federal Railway Authority. A list of 30 deficiencies had not been processed satisfactorily by DB. The company threatened not to commission the upcoming retrofitting of five ICE 3Ms for France traffic if the deficiencies were not remedied. The trains, which are run as multiple units 351 to 363, were finally delivered between November 2005 and early 2006.

Outwardly, the trains resemble the trains that have been in service since 2000. Some changes have been made in detail, for example:

  • The triangular structures of the air conditioning at the ends of the car were replaced by flatter and more streamlined ones.
  • The most striking difference inside is the 2nd class car between the 1st class area and the BordBistro : The first series is a 1st class car with compartments and reading lights, but which has seats the 2nd class car, while the second series uses a regular 2nd class car without compartments. Overall, this leads to a six-seat increase in seating capacity in 2nd class of the second series, while the number of seats in 1st class remains unchanged.
  • The seat numbers at the seats are written in significantly larger letters in the second series.

technology

With fully functional brakes, the multiple units have 189 brake hundredths ( brake position R + WB) or 154 brake hundredths (brake position R).

The 50 multiple units were originally to be equipped with ETCS by 2015 . The order, which also includes the ETCS equipment for 70 ICE T, amounts to 60 million euros.

With the redesign, the BordBistro becomes a full on-board restaurant again. The equipment is anchored in the contract for the ETCS equipment of the ICE T as an option. Negotiations were in progress to redeem this option and now the ICE 3 multiple units are being equipped with ETCS as part of the redesign . The conversion of all multiple units will now take until 2020.

Since January 2017 the multiple unit 323 “Schaffhausen” has been equipped with ETCS as a trial train. It was used from July 2017 for ETCS test drives on the Erfurt – Leipzig / Halle high-speed line. By December 2017, 11 multiple units had been converted to use them on ICE lines 15 and 29 . Since the timetable change and the opening of the new Ebensfeld – Erfurt line in December 2017, these trains have been using ETCS on the route.

According to information provided by DB in mid-June 2019, five multiple units will be "at a standstill" from July 2019, due to the redesign, "Rollkur" and "Trafo".

On July 9, 2008, this multiple unit, which was on the way from Munich to Dortmund as ICE 518, derailed shortly after 4 p.m. immediately at the exit from Cologne Central Station in front of the Hohenzollern Bridge . The cause is a broken wheelset shaft. The train was brought to a standstill by emergency braking after the wheelset rolled over the sleepers. Nobody was injured in the accident, and passengers were able to return to the platform through doors at the end of the two parts of the train. According to passengers, noticeable noises could be heard in a car before Cologne; after departure from Cologne one of the two multiple units was torn apart between two cars. Due to imminent danger , the Federal Railway Authority issued a notice on July 10, 2008, to shut down all ICE-3 trains after the end of the journey on that day, where the ultrasonic test of the axles had been more than 60,000 kilometers ago .

The tractor driver, who was able to free himself from the falling tractor, was seriously injured. Two people were slightly injured on the train. Shortly before the collision, the driver of the ICE was able to initiate an emergency braking action from a speed of around 80 km / h , which brought the train to a stop after around 250 m. The oncoming ICE 271 (ICE 1) brushed against the crashed train and damaged a side window of the ICE 3. The damage to the oncoming train was initially not noticed. No other people were harmed. The multiple unit 321 was then dissolved and several of its cars were distributed to other multiple units. Later it was reassembled with wagons from other sets.

The cause is an incorrectly set adjusting nut on a locking device. Two-week tests on the doors of the first series of the ICE 3 fleet would not have revealed any further abnormalities. The Federal Railway Authority instructed Deutsche Bahn to check the door locks as part of regular maintenance. In addition, the door construction was changed.

Equipped with WiFi hotspots (railnet) On the morning of October 12, 2018, fire broke out in transformer car 403 626 on the high-speed route Cologne – Rhein / Main near Dierdorf. The event was likely triggered by the breakage of a tie rod in the main transformer. The ICE 3 double unit was on its way to Munich as ICE 511. Car 403 626 burned out completely, the end car 403 526 also caught fire. The ICE was stopped on the open track and the 510 passengers were evacuated from the train. Five people were slightly injured. The front train of the double traction remained undamaged. Item 326, however, was subsequently canceled. It has been proven that transformer oil leaked and caught fire. Deutsche Bahn announced that it would check transformers and ancillary units on all ICE 3 trains and that it will continue to monitor transformers more closely in the future. The transformer oil was found to be contaminated in four ICE 3 trains, and as a result of this, up to six multiple units per day were missing. According to an instruction of December 20, 2018, ICE 3 multiple units that have not yet undergone a special inspection may no longer enter long tunnels from January 1, 2019.
