Denis Kudla (born August 17, 1992 in Kiev ) is an American tennis player .

Career

Beginnings

Denis Kudla, son of an architect and a housewife, started playing tennis at the age of 7. He went to a tennis academy in Burke, where he was trained by the tennis coach Frank Salazar. At the age of 13 he moved to Arlington County , where he still lives and trains today. Due to his extensive tennis training, there was no more time to attend a high school. Therefore, from the ninth grade onwards, he was tutored by a private tutor at home. When he was 16, he wanted to go to the University of Southern California , but ultimately decided against it in order to concentrate fully on tennis. In 2009 he won the Orange Bowl , one of the most important junior tournaments in the world. In 2010 he was in the final of the US Junior Open , but had to admit defeat to his compatriot Jack Sock . At the end of the same year, he was third in the junior world rankings. In 2010 he was also part of the junior Davis Cup team, which was eliminated in the first round against eventual winners Serbia 2: 3.

The year 2011

In the 2011 season, Kudla took part in 12 Challenger and 7 Futures tournaments. He succeeded in winning a futures tournament in the final against Dennis Lajola. On the ATP World Tour he took part in qualifications for the US Open and the Indian Wells Masters . However, he did not make it into the main field in either tournament. He played other tournaments in Los Angeles , Atlanta , Newport , Eastbourne , London and Houston (all 250 tournaments ). This only resulted in a respectable result at the tournament in Newport , where he was able to advance to the quarter-finals and there defeated his compatriot Michael Yani 3: 6, 7: 6, 5 , 5: 7. At the end of the year he finished 276th in the world rankings , which was his best ranking up to that point.

The year 2012

He started the 2012 season with the ATP Auckland , where he was defeated by local hero Artem Sitak in the first qualifying round . This was followed by the Australian Open , where he was able to qualify for the main draw over three qualifying rounds. In the first round, however, the tournament was over after he lost to German Tommy Haas in four sets with 6: 7, 5 , 6: 3, 0: 6, 5: 7. It continued with a Challenger tournament in Honolulu , in which he was able to advance to the quarter-finals and had to admit defeat to the Japanese Tatsuma Itō . At the next Challenger tournament in Dallas he made it to the quarterfinals again, where it was over for him. With a wild card he was able to take part in the ATP tournament in San José and survived the first round. In the round of 16 he got to do with his compatriot Andy Roddick , with whom he could keep up for long stretches. In the end he did not get the sensation and he was eliminated with 7: 6 5 , 6: 7 5 , 4: 6. At the ATP tournament in Memphis , he was eliminated in the second qualifying round against Robert Kendrick . A week later he was eliminated in the first main round at ATP Delray Beach against Dudi Sela with 4: 6, 3: 6. At the ATP-1000 tournament in Indian Wells he survived the first round and met Roger Federer in the second round . It was the first time they met on the professional tour. Roger Federer clearly won the game 6: 4, 6: 1. For the Masters tournament in Miami , he received a wild card from the tournament management and met Antonio Veić in the first round , who was able to qualify for the tournament through the qualifying rounds. He lost to the Croatian in three sets and was eliminated from the tournament. In the four subsequent Challenger tournaments, his best result was a quarter-finals at the Sarasota Open , where he was defeated by his compatriot James Blake in three sets . He missed the qualification for the French Open after a two-set loss to Eduardo Schwank . Even at the following Challenger tournament in Nottingham , he did not make it past the first round. He was defeated by the Australian Marinko Matosevic in two sets with 4: 6 and 6: 7 4 . In July he won the tournament in Lexington against Érik Chvojka , celebrating his first title on the ATP Challenger Tour . Then in October came a second tournament victory when he won the Challenger tournament in Charlottesville . At the end of the year he was in position 140 in the world rankings.

The year 2013

In January 2013 he made it into the main draw at the ATP tournament in Brisbane , but failed in the first round to Jürgen Melzer . In qualifying for the Australian Open , he failed in the first qualifying round. It was not until mid-March that he was able to celebrate another success when he reached the final at the Challenger tournament in Dallas , but lost it in three sets against Jürgen Melzer. About a month later he was in the final of the Challenger tournament in Tallahassee and won in two sets against Cedrik-Marcel Stebe . At the French Open he qualified for the peloton, where he was eliminated again in the first round. At Wimbledon he made it to the second round like last year, but lost it to Ivan Dodig . At the end of the year he was at position 115 in the world rankings, making up 25 positions last year.
