The Division 1 1950-51 was the 13th staging of the professional French football league. The champion was the OGC Nice , which won its first title.
The first game day was August 27, 1950, the last game day was May 27, 1951. There was no “winter break”; point games were also played on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve .
societies
The clubs that had not finished the previous season worse than in 16th place, as well as the two promoted teams from the second division, were eligible to participate . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north ( CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , OSC Lille , Racing Lens ),
- three from Paris and Champagne ( Stade Français , which had separated from Red Star Olympique before this season , Racing Paris , Stade Reims ),
- two from the northwest ( Stade Rennes UC , promoted Le Havre AC ),
- three from the northeast ( FC Nancy , Racing Strasbourg , FC Sochaux ),
- two from the southwest (defending champions Girondins Bordeaux , Toulouse FC ),
- five from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , FC Sète , promoted Olympique Nîmes , Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice ).
Season course
This season was very balanced in terms of the strength of the teams involved and was exciting until the last day of the game; Beaudet even describes it as "the most extraordinary and craziest in league history". Because until well into the spring, eight teams could still have serious hopes for the championship - including the defending champion and both promoted teams - while nine teams were still fighting against relegation at this time, of which only Stade Français dropped relatively early. Newcomer Le Havre became autumn champions and still led the table by the end of February, but then had to replace three central forces ( Bihel , de Vroet , Christiansen ) due to injuries and also had to pay tribute to the wear and tear in the cup (two replays in the quarter-finals alone) pay. Nice, on the other hand, was in 18th place with just one plus point after six matches, fought their way up to seventh place by December and then benefited from the fact that the Brazilian playmaker Amalfi finally “broke the knot”. After all, the OGC - after the club's management had already given the team their third coach in February - two game days before the end of the game, level on points with opponents Le Havre, Lille and Nîmes, from whom they could no longer be ousted. Lille remained, for the fourth time in a row and only because of the poorer goal quotient, the ungrateful rank of Dauphin (the "Crown Prince" is the runner-up in France).
In the lower half of the table, the decisions about relegation, additional relegation games and the question of who had to accompany Stade Français on the direct route to Division 2 were also only made on the last two match days. Lens and Sète managed in the subsequent Barrages to assert themselves against the third and fourth placed second division side, while Toulouse was relegated. For the following season came Olympique Lyon and FC Metz added to the field of Erstdivisionäre.
