Division 2 1989/90
^ Division 1 1990/91

The Division 2 1990/91 was the 52nd staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from July 27, 1990 to May 10, 1991; From December 21st to January 12th there was only a short winter break this time.

Second division champion was Le Havre AC .

societies

The 29 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) or lower after the previous season were eligible to participate ; in addition - after Racing Paris 1 had voluntarily chosen the direct route from the first to the third division - only one first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south, east and two from the north). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :

Only the first in the group were eligible for direct promotion. In addition, there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement; if there was still identity - as was the case this season between Angers and Rouen - the higher number of goals was decisive. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

In terms of sport, there was a four-way battle for the promotion and the two relegation places in Group A, which was only decided on the last day of the game, in which Alès then went empty-handed as fourth due to the goal difference. In Group B it remained similarly exciting until the end, although Le Havre had secured the victory of this season early on; here, too, there were four clubs that still had a chance of second or third place at the kick-off of the 34th matchday. In contrast, the recently stricter licensing policy of the association for five clubs resulted in a descent, which four of them had actually escaped according to the table. Debt, the decreasing attractiveness of Division 2 with spectators and consequently empty coffers did not stop even at a traditional club like Stade Reims, three decades earlier the absolute figurehead of French football. This benefited four teams whose scores would not have been enough for relegation, and it also meant that all six promoted from the national remained in the league.

In the 612 encounters 1,286 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.1 goals per game and meant the fourth consecutive breakdown of a corresponding league record. There had never been 208 draws in the history of Division 2 either. The most successful goal scorers were Didier Monczuk (Strasbourg) with 23 goals in Group A and Christophe Lagrange (Angers) with 19 goals in Group B ; As in the previous year, Monczuk won the league top scorer's crown. For the following season three relegated from Division 1 ( Girondins Bordeaux , Brest Armorique FC and OGC Nice ) were added; Six teams rose from the third-highest league: SC Amiens , CS Sedan , Racing Ancenis , LB Châteauroux , FC Grenoble Isère and FC Perpignan .

    Determination of the master

The two group winners met each other on a return game to determine this year's division 2 champion. Le Havre won their home game 3-0, in Nîmes they split 0-0, so that the Normans were able to secure this year's second division championship - their fourth overall.

    Relegation

The group runners-up and thirds fought in a two-stage elimination to see which of them against the first division 19. FC Toulouse was allowed to play for another promotion place in the top division. First, the two runners-up in a single game each met the third of the other group; Strasbourg prevailed against Laval 3-1 and Lens against Valenciennes-Anzin 1-0 and then met - now again on a two-legged basis. The Alsatians played in front of their own audience against the northern French only 1: 1 and lost 1: 3 on the opponent's place.

After that, Toulouse defeated Lens 4-0, lost only 0-1 in the second leg and stayed in Division 1 - in which, despite the defeat, Lens also rose as the third second division because with Bordeaux, Brest and Nice three clubs in the second division were forcibly transferred.
