The Edogawa district of Tokyo was created on October 1, 1932 from the merger of the Machi Komatsugawa ( 小 松川 町 , -machi ), Koiwa ( 小 岩 町 , -machi ) and Mizue ( 瑞 江 町 , -machi ), as well as the Mura Kasai ( 葛西村 , -mura ), Matsue ( 松江 村 , -mura ), Shikamoto ( 鹿 本村 , -mura ) and Shinozaki ( 篠 崎 村 , -mura ) in Minamikatsushika-gun ( 南葛 飾 郡 ).

Takeshi Saitō has been the mayor of Edogawa since 2019. The former municipal official prevailed in the uniform regional elections in 2019 with the support of LDP and Kōmeitō with a two-thirds majority against two candidates. Predecessor Masami Tada stopped running after 20 years. Also in the uniform regional elections, the 44 members of the district parliament were newly elected. For the first time in the country, a Japanese from India was elected to a local parliament. He ran under his nickname Yogi ( よ ぎ ) for the Constitutional Democratic Party and received the fifth highest number of votes.

Edogawa is a five-seat constituency for the parliament of Tokyo Prefecture; in the 2017 election , two seats went to the Tomin First no Kai of Governor Yuriko Koike , one each to the LDP, Kōmeitō and KPJ .

In elections to the national House of Representatives, the majority of the district forms the constituency of Tokyo 16 , which has been represented by the liberal democrat Hideo Ōnishi since 2012 . Koiwa in the north of Edogawa belongs together with Katsushika to the 17th constituency of the prefecture, which Katsuei Hirasawa won for the eighth time in a row for the LDP in the 2017 election .
