The regional women 's soccer division is the third highest division in German women's soccer in northwest Germany ( Lower Saxony , Bremen , Hamburg , Schleswig-Holstein ) . The league is subordinate to the North German Football Association .
history
The league was founded in 1986 as Oberliga Nord. At the time, the Oberliga Nord was the top division in Northern Germany. The champion qualified for the final round of the German championship together with the best-placed teams from the four regional associations. The first master was Lorbeer Rothenburgsort from Hamburg . The new league could not end the chronic failure of the North German clubs in the German championship. Before the league was founded, only two North German clubs reached the semi-finals. Only Fortuna Sachsenroß Hannover made it to the semi-finals in 1988. The Hanoverians lost both games 1-0 to KBC Duisburg . The 1989/90 season was about qualifying for the new Bundesliga . Fortuna Sachsenroß Hannover, SC Poppenbüttel , Schmalfelder SV , SV Wilhelmshaven and VfR Eintracht Wolfsburg took the five places .
From then on, the league was only second class and the league champion, in some years also the runner-up, had to fight for promotion to the upper house in a promotion round. Here the northern clubs were less successful. Only Schmalfelder SV (twice) as well as TV Jahn Delmenhorst and VfL Wittekind Wildeshausen (once each) made it through sporting routes. In 1997 the Bundesliga was reduced to a group of twelve teams. The regional league (the league was renamed in 1994) were able to qualify for the new class by relegation. Although Hamburger SV was only second behind Fortuna Sachsenroß Hannover, as the Lower Saxons withdrew for financial reasons, HSV came as a successor in the Bundesliga. In the 1997/98 season, WSV Wolfsburg caused a curiosity. During the season, the team only conceded one goal. However, this hit meant the only defeat. Wolfsburg rose, but HSV came down again. After two unsuccessful attempts, in the 1999/2000 season the HSV won all of the season's games, the team was only able to celebrate promotion again in 2001.
The 2003/04 season was about qualifying for the new 2nd Bundesliga . The four places were taken by SV Victoria Gersten , the second team of HSV, SuS Timmel and MTV Wolfenbüttel . Since 2004 the Regionalliga Nord is only the third highest division. From now on, the champion will be promoted directly to the 2nd Bundesliga.
mode
The Regionalliga Nord consists of fourteen teams that compete against each other in the league system . A win is rewarded with three, a draw with one point. Until 2017, the team with the highest points was champions and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga . Since 2019, the five regional league champions and one regional league champion have been determining who have been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in three drawn pairings with a return game. The participating regional league champion is determined using a performance table of the regional associations, which includes the performance of the clubs in the last three seasons in the first and second Bundesliga. If the master renounces his participation or the winner of the games renounces his right of promotion or the winner is denied promotion by the DFB , the loser moves up. If the loser of the promotion round is also denied promotion or if he does not do so, no team is promoted. In contrast to men's football, second teams can also be promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. This happened for the first time in 2006, when the second team of Hamburger SV could celebrate championship and promotion.
On the other side of the table, the last two teams are relegated to the respective association league. The relegated teams will be replaced by two promoted players from the leagues. The first to be promoted will be determined by the champions of the Lower Saxony leagues West and East in the first and second leg. The champions of the Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Bremen leagues determine the second promoted team in a promotion round in which each team meets each other once. If two or more teams from the 2nd Bundesliga relegate to Regionalliga Nord, the number of relegated teams from the Regionalliga increases accordingly. If no north German team is relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga, only one regional league has to relegate to the association league.
If a club withdraws its team before the start or during the season, it is automatically placed at the end of the table and is considered a relegated team.
